In the name of bringing you hard news (and all things "Twilight"), I spent my Friday night at the Borders bookstore o n La Cienega to take in the scene at one of the many "Breaking Dawn" release parties going on across the country. By now, you've heard of Stephenie Meyer, her vampire book "Twilight," and the growing hysteria surrounding the upcoming movie starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. "Breaking Dawn" is th e fourth and final installment in the teen vampire saga, and it went on sale officially at midnight. ( Above, friends Farnaz Vakili, 19, and Suzy Chon, 18, show their team spirit .) Previously, only the "Harry Potter" series has inspired these nationwide book parties -- nights where stores stay open late, play trivia games, host costume contests and give away freebies while counting down the clock until they're officially allowed to sell new books to eager fans. By 10 :30, around 100 girls, some "Twilight" moms and yes, a few fanboys, had assembl ed in the store. Twenty-five-year-old airline steward Brian McDonald said he picked up the first book between flights and was immediately hooked. "It's just hard to put down," he said. The trivia game was surprisingly difficult, and competitors didn't stand a chance against well-read Min Sung Lee. She won a "Breaking Dawn" shirt. And there was some lively debate about who Bella should end up with; Team Jacob got pummelled by the overwhelming show of Edward fans. Sadly ...

At 12:01 A.M. Saturday morning the fourth and likely final installment in the wildly popular Twilight series hit bookstores. The series -- which follows the adventures of teenage Bella, the vampire Edward, and the werewolf Jacob -- is being heralded as a successor to Harry Potter by booksellers. There are over 5 million copies of the previous three titles -- Twilight , New Moon , and Eclipse -- in print. Parties were held at bookstores across the country to celebrate the release of Breaking Dawn.
