When Robert Asprin passed away suddenly six weeks ago, I had a flood of memories about his Myth Adventures series. I don't remember how old I was when I first read Another Fine Myth —probably 10 or 11—but I remember... ...

Sounds strange, right? Well, there’s a book that was just released called Here Be Dragons: Tales of Dragoncon edited by Bill Fawcett. Featuring short stories by popular sci-fi/fantasy writers such as Robert Asprin, Janny Wurts, Todd McCaffrey, Jody Lynn Nye and Mike Resnick, all stories take place at Dragoncon. For those who live under a rock [...] ...

First, Robert Lynn Asprin , author of the Myth series of novels as well as the Phule's Company series of novels is dead from natural causes in New Orleans. He died in May in bed whilst reading a Terry Pratchett novel. I just found out when I got my new issue of Locus Magazine. Second, Adrian is in the doghouse today. After skating it seems his new shoes picked up a large quantity of dog shit. This, alone, is not news. The fact he didn't notice and got in my new car with it, is news. I have used massive amounts of carpet chemicals and, in a few hours, we'll see if you can tell or not , happily you can barely tell there was ever a problem. He's my friend, so murder is probably out of the question. But I figured a little public humiliation will at least make me feel better about cutting the day short to go home and clean up shit stains. However skating and breakfast were fun. And I hope Adrian feels better. I'd hate to kill a sick man. Third, Erin visited yesterday -- an always fun event. I have given Erin dishes and silverware from my overstock. Yay. If anyone's moving I still have overstock available for a new abode, just ask. I also took her to the office to get hurricane supplies such as lights, batteries, and whatnot. Today she's home awaiting a matters for her new bed which, as of yet, is unused. We also passed a gas station where diesel was $5.39 a gallon -- near the airport of course. Fourth, I filled out Identity Theft Affidavits ...

Holidays are annoying. Other people's holidays at least. I would apologise to anyone on holiday, but then they're probably not reading this. That's part of it. I like people to be where I expect them to be, particularly since their holidays invariably coincide with the moment I need to get hold of them most. The other part is that they're invariably in caravans in front of me, doing about 40mph. Things I've been reading in the last few days: The Picture of Dorian Grey (Oscar Wilde), Little Myth Marker ( Robert Asprin), Hit or Myth ( Robert Asprin), The Old Man and the Sea (Hemmingway). Asprin's Myth Inc series doesn't get the attention it deserves. In comic fantasy terms, it's as good as the stuff put out by the likes of Terry Pratchett and Tom Holt, but doesn't seem to get much shelf space in bookshops these days. ...

[This message is cross-posted from my work blog ] We are pleased to announce that the papers of Robert Asprin , who passed away in May, have been placed at NIU, as part of the SFWA Collection . A portion of the papers have arrived, and we will begin processing them. We expect to have them ready for public use sometime in the spring. On a similar note, I should apologize to our authors who have been patiently waiting for their finding aids to premiere. Your papers have, in fact, been processed, but we are working on standardizing the look of all of our finding aids, which means that the library webgoblins have hold of them for the moment. I will do my best to free them as soon as I can. ...

The Marcon SF convention in Columbus, Ohio, was great fun last weekend, though everyone was saddened by the unexpected death of author guest-of-honor Robert Asprin just before the event. Though I was not a reader of his work, I join everyone who mourn his passing. A lesser disappointment for my six-year-old son was the lack of a swimming pool at the downtown Hyatt hotel, but otherwise it was an excellent con. William H. Keith - Author and Artist The highlight of the convention for me was getting to meet author and artist William H. Keith Jr., whose work I have followed more years than I care to admit. Bill has had over 80 books published, plus short stories, role-playing games, source books, and lots of fantastic SF art for the Traveller SF role-playing game. Along with his late brother, Andrew Keith, Bill was responsible for much of the "look" of Traveller , and his spacecraft designs are some of my favorites. I was very happy to see some dazzling prints of Bill's graphics at the Marcon art show, and I managed to come home with a great piece by Bill depicting a "Retro Launch" rocket boosting into space. Fact is, I'm in the middle of reading Bill's latest military SF novel, Star Strike , done under the penname of Ian Douglas. His military techno-thrillers (Silent Service; Seals, The Warrior Breed) are done under the H. Jay Riker moniker. Bill is scheduled to appear at Pittsburgh's Confluence con, July 25-27, and if the planetary orbits ...

It's been a tough few of months for the SF world.  We''ve lost Robert Asprin, Arthur C. Clarke, Algis Budrys, and, now Thomas M. Disch.  I mainly knew him through his non-fiction and critical work, such as, most recently and very notably, The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of .  Seems like there's a new reason to be sad every day.  Rest in peace, Mr. Disch. Nevertheless, I feel that, for the first time since the cyberpunk movement of the early 80s, there's a real, significant infusion of new blood in the genre (I can't help but feel that the 90s were a wasted decade), so I guess this is just another sign of the old giving way to the new, another turn in the cycle of science fiction's life.  So we should celebrate what's come before, but not get bogged down in nostalgia.  The fact that I am reading Revelation Space might have something to do with my newfound optimism.  Nearly two thirds of the wway through, I'm finding it a refreshing change of pace from the pointlessness of slipstream and urban fantasy. Anyhow, my own writing continues.  Since my last post, I scattered 3100 words among four WIP.  Here's the breakdown: 650 words in the SF novella 1300 words in the SF novel 150 words in the neurotic vampire story 1000 words into the humorous fantasy novel I''m happy with my production this week.  And this despite working frantically on the day job! ...

F or the consideration of the judges, competitors, and anyone with an Internet connection and five-or-so minutes to kill... The all-important silhouette The challenge: Design a dress for going out on the town inspired by a photograph of New York City. In a surprise twist, for our LiveJournal task the destination has been changed to New Orleans. My materials for this week's challenge were white cotton, white lace trimming and iridescent gray glass beads. Inspiration: A photograph taken by me in May of 2007: New Orleans life is such a night life. The thing that comes up very often is that our day essentially doesn't start until midnight or 2 in the morning. ~ Robert Asprin When I learned that the city where our night on the town was to take place had been switched, my first thought was of New Orleans' French Quarter and its wrought-iron, gaslight and jazz, all things that are most becoming at night. I chose the above photograph of one of their balconies, which always remind me of lace. Lace and the city's riverside location led my thoughts to Catherine Deneuve's famous and iconic white lace minidress designed for her by Yves Saint Laurent for the 1969 Truffaut film, La Sirène du Mississipi (seen above). Defending the design: My outfit for this week is a sleeveless modestly topped dress cut from a soft airy cotton with a high French empire waist. Breathable fabric choice, Austenian waistline placement and the skirt's relative fullness and ...

A brief review, since I haven't done one in a while. This rather slender volume is a collection of short stories from the inventer of the Myth Inc fantasy series, Robert Asprin and his writing partner on the series for the last few years, Jody Lynn Nye. It was put together at the very start of their association, and so marks the transition between the first batch of Myth books and the second. The first thing to note is that all of the stories are Myth Inc. based, so anyone who isn't already a fan of the series is likely to be lost, bewildered, and probably put off, even though the stories are actually quite entertaining. Most of them rely on characters and traits already introduced for their effectiveness, so this probably isn't a good place to start. Read from the beginning like everyone else. (Particularly since there are lovely compendia of the early stories available) The short stories are lively enough, but I have to admit a lot of them had a tentative feel to them. It's hardly surprising, since the volume was a dry run for the partnership. It does mean though that a few of the short stories lack a certain edge, as though the authors were both unwilling to take any risks with a world they planned on doing far more with. Even so, it's a good read, and it's fun to see Asprin working in the shorter medium. ...
