Keeping the Pulse Rate Low: The three-button blazer of sports sedans. BY PATRICK BEDARD The Maxima belongs to a threatened species, the front-drive sporting sedan. No one is talking extinction here, but rear drive allows a balance of handling and a purity of steering that’s just not possible in a front-driver with upwards of 270 horsepower. So, over the last, say, dozen years, the popularity of rear-drivers from Benz , BMW , Cadillac ( CTS ), Infiniti , and Lexus —not to mention Mustangs , and 300s , Magnums , and Challengers from Chrysler —have bled away the excitement from the front-drive class. Now comes an all-new Maxima with a distinctive, hourglass shape and plenty of motor muscle, but it’s still a front-driver. Where shall we park it in the new-car pantheon? Over by the Acura TL , for sure, along with the VW Passat , perhaps. The Maxima’s opening price within a shallow breath of $30,000 puts it lower than most of the famous-maker European imports, and its lack of a manual gearbox damps its appeal to the red-hot-corpuscle crowd. Actualsporting flavor comes down to a single option, which we’ll cover below in more detail. Without that, the Maxima is merely the top-line four-door available in Nissan stores. This new car, chopped nearly four inches in length compared with the previous model, has been moved to Nissan’s all-purpose D platform, also used for the Altima and Murano . The Maxima is notably wider than the Altima, 2.5 in ...

Can 10Best Cars–winning bones translate to 5Best Trucks glory? We’ll see soon. BY JARED GALL Marketing CSIs examining the Volkswagen Tiguan naming catastrophe need look all the way to Europe, where, as we’ve reported, the name was selected by readers of Germany’sAuto Bild magazine from a pool of equally weird alternatives. It is, VW, tells us, a combination of the German words for “tiger” and “iguana.” Either nobody in the higher echelons of management noticed, or they just didn’t care that it also works as a combination of theEnglish words for “tiger” and “iguana.” As inspiration for a model name, the tiger makes sense—regal, beautiful, and powerful; the iguana, not so much. Quite lazy in captivity, young iguanas eat bugs and the feces of adults—not exactly the cuddly sort of spokes-animal that will steal mountains of sales from the Honda CR-V . But did you know that green iguanas have a third eye on the top of their heads? Third Eye (Not) Blind Called a parietal eye, it can’t form images like a normal eye, but it can sense light and movement, which makes it particularly useful for avoiding airborne predators. Perhaps this is why Volkswagen chose to incorporate the lizard into its SUV name; the Tiguan’s optional sunroof is immense and allows occupants to track winged threats and enjoy passing mountains and trees with equal ease. Less expensive, sweet moves, and plenty of power make a case that this 1 is the one to buy. BY DAVE VANDERWERP We’ve already told you at length about the heroically powerful 300-hp 135i version of BMW’s new 1-series coupe, which is essentially a mini 3-series , one of our perpetually favorite cars. Sharing powertrains with the larger and slightly heavier 3-series is a great starting place, and the twin-turbo 135i delivers cover-worthy numbers—4.7 seconds to 60 mph, 13.3 through the quarter-mile—that are nearly as swift as the previous-generation, 333-hp E46 M3 . We were generally impressed, although the price of our well-equipped Test car was $42,895 which is getting prohibitively close to the cost of a 335i coupe. The One We’d Buy Truthfully, many of us were more enthused about the less expensive and more fuel-friendly 128i, with the silky 230-hp inline-six and six-speed manual carried over from the 328i. This impressively efficient engine uses lightweight, aluminum-and-magnesium construction and is throttled by varying valve lift (BMW calls this technology Valvetronic) instead of a traditional, less efficient, throttle plate. In a major car company, there are engineers, accountants, and designers. Engineers are responsible for the research, the development, the facts and the science. They’re the people that make cars work. Then, you have accountants, who, so far as I understand, are there solely to reduce budgets, force engineers to use cheaper materials, cost-cut, and, to ensure that the lab-coated professionals don’t get what they want. And then you have designers. From a bean counter’s point of view, I can only imagine the sort of frustration and chaos that stylists might create. A designer’s job is merely to provide the clothing that a car’s frame wears... ...

If you think for one second that Porsche’s new Cayenne GTS is going to measure up to the straight-ahead acceleration of its much lauded Cayenne Turbo, you’ve been misinformed. No SUV on God’s green earth can match its 500 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, or the 550 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque available with the new Turbo S, but the GTS, going about things in an entirely different way, might just take the title of sportiest ute ever devised. Of course, consider that this proposal comes from someone never blessed with the chance to drive a Lamborghini LM002, one of the most bizarre oddities to ever grace the deserts of the Persian Gulf countries, or for that matter California... ...

It’s heading into the twilight, now, the first gen Mazda6. It is to be replaced for model year 2009 by a new, larger, more angular and altogether younger, albeit four-door-only vehicle, but if my 2008 Mazda6 Sport Test car is any indication, the original 6 is planning on going out at a decibel or two below a bang, but at far from a whisper. Remember, in 2002 this was the car that, along with the Mazda3 released a few years later, became representative of Mazda’s “Stylish, Insightful and Spirited” design philosophy that has since been mimicked by some of the more prolific Japanese manufacturers... ...

The year 2002 was very important for Nissan of North America. It launched the second generation Altima, growing it from a dull intermediate into a vehicle that redefined what a sporty midsize car could be. With its powerful V6 engine, sport-tuned suspension and affordable pricing, it instantly snapped up awards left, right and centre, including AJAC’s Car of the Year. It shot up the sales chart, becoming one of America’s most popular cars, not to mention Nissan’s best-selling nameplate. But 2002 also saw the start of a boatload of troubles for its flagship sedan, the Maxima. The transformation of the Altima meant a considerable overlap between it and its bigger brother... ...

Look at the 2008 Acura MDX and it's hard to believe that it’s been 21 years since Honda introduced its upscale Acura brand. It was 1986 when the full-size Legend and sporty Integra came on the scene, based on the award-winning Accord and Civic models, and it was quite a thing to see a Japanese manufacturer ready to throw down with the domestic and European big boys in the luxury game, crested wreaths and three-pointed stars in its crosshairs. Since then the company has grown, releasing sports cars good enough to compete with Ferraris along the way, and, since 2001, luxury crossovers that don't just compete but rather are market leaders in technological and ergonomic advancements... ...

On the great continuum of sports cars, there are the good ones, the great ones and then there are the legends. These are the cars that don’t just invoke desire or memories, they invoke a sense of passion and honour. Not many make it to this level, but for the few that do, it is the zenith. I’ve seen people debate this until blue in the face about Skyline GT-Rs, Corvette Z06s, Shelby Cobras and numerous Ferraris too, but the moment that the 911 Turbo’s name is dropped, everyone goes quiet, nodding in approval. Approaching the Turbo for the first time, I am humbled. This is a car that has a reputation of putting Porsche on the same plane as Ferrari and Lamborghini... ...
