On college campuses and in high school corridors, there's a lively market for Ritalin and other stimulant medication prescribed to those diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. And studies have long shown that kids with ADHD are much more likely than kids without attention problems to experiment with drugs recreationally. So, is it the stimulant medication or is it ADHD -- a disorder frequently accompanied by problems of impulse-control -- that makes a kid more likely to abuse illicit substances? Do attention problems make these kids more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior such as substance abuse? Or does the fact that they are likely to take a widely abused prescription drug make these kids more open to abusing other drugs? It's a question that's long worried parents and sparked furious debate among those who research and treat ADHD, which is believed to affect 8% of all American school kids, as well as among skeptics of psychopharmacology: Does medicating a kid for ADHD make it more or less likely that he or she will abuse illegal substances? As the first generation of kids to be diagnosed and medicated in large numbers grows into adulthood, answers are becoming clearer. A study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine takes the latest crack at the controversy, and finds that for girls with ADHD, being medicated for the condition makes substance abuse less likely. The st ...

Pink Pets and Pills That distinctive Pink Pet eraser smell The flag halfway down when Kennedy died That instinctive rush at the final bell When insiders finally got outside To find the world spun out of our control A sense of unease and not feeling well But going through the motions anyway While asking hard questions about the soul: If ours could speak what should it have to say Of life thought as heaven but felt as hell? I grew up under duck-and-cover drills And the influence of Ritalin pills I suppose it was propaganda when They taught us as they did tendentiously I felt it if did not quite know it then And it sounded good about being free But there is no national holiday For me then or now here or anywhere And if God knows I wonder does he care Or even if there could be somebody Who might prefer not that I leave but stay And if I do I wish I knew how to Here at the threshold of my age I wait To approach the moment I meet my fate +Steven Curtis Lance Copyright MMVIII ...

This morning's FOX and Friends 10/10/08 found the crew (with Alisyn Camerota sitting in for Gretchen Carlson) torn between two memes, so like a YTD child without the Ritalin, they ping-ponged back and forth between William Ayers and ACORN - enough to drive you nuts! The middle hour went something like this: :03 Breaking News - Ohio Secretary of State breaking law, not being helpful to county Boards of Elections :05 Voter fraud latest - OH SoS not giving Counties opportunityto check SSNs, etc. There are no checks and balances! (F&F's newfound concern about accountability, as evidenced by Kilmeade's recent worry that the White House and Congress may be under Democratic control come January) A guy who works in a mall kiosk was approached -allegedly by ACORN members - and offered cigarettes and $1 to fill out multiple applications, and he did it 70X for the cigs! (Arrest that man.) :08 When did Obama know Ayers was a former radical terrorist? There's so much gray! Michelle and Bernadette worked for the same law firm, and a Google map shows Ayers', Louis Farrakhan's, and Obama's homes and a "former Rezko property" in the same nice neighborhood!!! Maybe Bill O'Reilly will suggest Al Qaeda bomb Chicago when they're through with San Francisco. :16 Intro to next segment is clip from SNL where Obama-actor states his best friend and mentor is Ayers, as McCain-character wanders around in background. :18 Bob Beckel manages to defend ACORN, s ...

In response to what seems a national trend across college campuses, Northwestern Health Services has increased its efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse on campus. Students this week can drop off outdated or unusable prescription and over the counter drugs at Health Services Pharmacy, as part of a drive initiated by University Residential Life. Proper pharmaceutical drug disposal can prevent theft or other misuse, according to Senior Assistant Director of University Residential Life Virginia Koch. “The rate of prescription [drug] misuse has increased dramatically in the last five years, and it looks like Northwestern is no exception,” said Michele Morales, Director of Health Education. Morales cited statistics that say almost 10 percent of Northwestern students have reported misusing amphetamines in their lifetime. While this statistic includes both prescription stimulants and crystal meth, Morales said she suspects most of that number comes from prescription drug use. Koch, in collaboration with Health Services, instituted Campus Safety Week to follow up with the safety training new students received during Wildcat Welcome. The focus on pharmaceuticals came after a workshop Koch attended, which “reinforced [that] there’s a larger problem that I wasn’t aware of going on.” Amphetamines, such as Ritalin or Adderall prescribed for ADD/ADHD, are the most commonly abused prescription substances, followed by sedatives and opiates, ...

(HealthDay News) -- Stimulant treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) significantly cuts the odds that adolescent girls will smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs, a new Massachusetts General Hospital study shows. The finding parallels previous studies in boys, the team note. People with ADHD are at significantly increased risk for cigarette smoking and substance abuse. In the past, there were concerns that treatment of ADHD with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin might increase the risk of drug or alcohol abuse. But in several studies of boys and young men with ADHD, researchers have found that stimulant treatment actually decreases the risk and delays the onset of substance abuse in adolescence. It does not affect the risk of using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs in adulthood, however. The same researchers set out to see how stimulant treatment for ADHD affects the risk of substance abuse in adolescent girls. "Girls with ADHD actually tend to get into trouble with substance abuse earlier than do boys with the disorder, so confirming those results was not simply academic," lead researcher Timothy Wilens, director of the Substance Abuse Program in Massachusetts General's Pediatric Psychopharmacology Department, said in a hospital news release. For their study, the researchers examined data from 114 girls with ADHD who had enrolled in a study investigating the impact of ADHD on the risk of substance abuse. The girls were ...
