Carrie Izard Richardson once wrote that her columns in the Globe allowed her to be "a surveyor of the west suburban landscape," mapping a terrain where issues that drive national conversations jockeyed for space with the commonplace. Carrie Richardson Those dispatches from a cluttered desk in her Waltham home also formed an autobiography in chapters of fewer than 800 words. Using anecdotes from her roles as a mother and a daughter, a wife and a writer, she examined triumphs and setbacks - the giddy joy and the numbing grief of her life in the 1990s. Of the challenges and endless wonders that came with raising her two daughters, she wrote in 1994: "How could I possibly have fantasized the level of emotion that would spring from the first step, the first loose tooth, the first report card, the first crush on a boy, the first tentative questions about life or the first favor asked of me that I can never grant: 'Mom, when you die, will you become a star so I can wish on you and make you alive again?' " Mrs. Richardson, whose columns appeared in the Globe's West Weekly edition for several years and who more recently was assistant director of public and media relations at Bentley College, died July 10 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 52 and was diagnosed with a brain tumor about seven months ago. With her husband, David, she bought a house in Waltham 21 years ago. As with many young couples starting a family, they envisioned that first ...

The effects of a struggling economy are beginning to hit state government, with Gov. Sonny Perdue announcing that he will be forced to dip into reserves to offset a $600 million shortfall. In fact, at the rate revenues are falling, the state's entire $1.5 billion rainy day fund may be drained long before the fiscal year runs its course next June. Significant cutbacks in state spending seem almost certain. Dire as that sounds, though, things could be worse. Last spring, House Speaker Glenn Richardson tried to raid Georgia's rainy day fund to finance election-year tax cuts. Had he succeeded, the state's reserves would have been cut in half, and today we'd be a lot closer to a budgetary crisis. ...

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is coming to Springfield to be the keynote speaker at a brunch on Aug. 13 hosted by the Democratic County Chairmen’s Association. That brunch, at 9 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield, is among events in the capital city marking Governor’s Day at the State Fair. Alan Pirtle, the Monroe County Democratic chairman and president of the statewide group, called it a “tremendous honor” to have Richardson, who was a candidate for president this year, make the trip to Springfield. “Governor Richardson’s visit is especially timely considering all of the excitement surrounding Illinois’ own Barack Obama being the Democratic nominee for president and U.S. Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin running for re-election,” Pirtle said in a statement. He said Durbin was instrumental in helping secure the visit from Richardson. “There is no question that Governor Richardson is one of the most accomplished and respected leaders in the Democratic Party and the nation as a whole,” Pirtle added. Richardson was elected governor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. He was also in the U.S. House and was United Nations ambassador and secretary of energy under President Bill Clinton. After dropping out of the contest for president, Richardson later endorsed Obama when Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was still in the race. Tickets to the brunch are $35, and advanced purchases are strongly recommended. Information ab ...

Sometimes our most valuable assets go unnoticed. Kingston's Richardson Beach is one such example. A popular swimming spot and valued public space since the late 1800s until quite recently, we have let it fall into disuse. Maybe this has to do with the (generally mistaken) notion that the water quality in Lake Ontario is poor. Maybe we have come to expect that a beach should be white sand and palm trees. Or maybe we've turned ourselves into individual "taxpayers" and forgotten about the things we hold in common and that bind us as a community. In any case, Richardson Beach is now practically empty. Even the hottest July afternoon finds only a rare bather in the water or using the all-but-forgotten Richardson Bath House. The facilities that the city once maintained are no longer safe or convenient. Today's bather must use a dank change room and run a gauntlet of slippery rocks. Despite the fact that the water quality is generally better than it has been for decades, one risks pain just trying to get into it. The time is ripe for restoring Richardson Beach. Its location - just east of the Murney Tower at the foot of Barrie Street - makes it easily accessible for those living in central Kingston. As the options for outdoor public swimming are closed off by privatization of shorelines and development on waterfronts, places such as Richardson Beach are rare public assets. With growing concerns about sedentary lifestyles, we can use them to p ...

Hanging in David Kenney’s locker is the five-year-old funeral booklet honoring his grandfather’s death. Growing up without a father, Kenney always wanted to make his grandfather proud. In Wednesday, what would have been his grandfather’s 89th birthday, Kenney decided the best way to pay tribute was to give his verbal commitment as part of UConn’s 2009 recruiting class. Kenney first informed Huskies running backs coach Terry Richardson, then head coach Randy Edsall, of his decision to join UConn. Others hot on Kenney’s trail were West Virginia, Nebraska, Florida State, Alabama and Georgia Tech. “I know it was a long process and had to deal with a lot of (nonsense), but I feel Connecticut is a great place to be at,” Kenney said. “It’s where I want to call home the next four to five years.” Kenney credits the UConn coaching staff for its genuine approach in making him feel at home. It also helped that geographically, UConn allows Kenny’s mother to come see him play. The 6-foot, 209-pound quarterback/strong safety from The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., said he’s fallen “out of love” with signal calling. Instead he wants to deliver the hits rather than be on the receiving end. Throw in his 4.3 40-yard dash time and it’s not hard to see why opposing receivers will try to avoid being hits by Kenney. “I try to stay modest, but I can’t wait to bring the wood this year,” Kenney said. ...
