Just this once, I'm going to bite (more like nip) the hand that publishes me, or more accurately, the fingers of those who contribute its content. I was scanning the Huffington Entertainment page several days ago, looking for some interesting perspective on the life and work of actor Richard Widmark, who died last week at age 93. I saw an article on why Kate Hudson shouldn't wear wigs. I spied about three tedious looking pieces on Britney Spears (with one titled "I'm Britney's Neighbor, Bitch!") and a couple on Brad and Angelina's purported marriage. I know entertainment is meant to be light and diverting, but inevitably it also mirrors the tastes and values of our time. Too much of what I observe these days feels like so much noise, signifying nothing- or very little. Am I alone here, or do others feel it too? And Huffington is nowhere near the worst offender in this respect. Just surf your 800 TV channels sometime, and look a bit more closely at what's on (besides "John Adams" and a few other solid series on HBO. Is this where all the good writers went?) Just why does the media business have to promulgate so blatantly what's become a junk-food culture? Why, in the face of rampant over-consumption as well as hazards both environmental and economic, do we remain so mired in sensationalism and the superficial? Certainly the phenomenon of tabloid journalism is nothing new, but in the past, it was relegated to its ... Source: search.hollywood.com --- 37 days ago

There was always something classy about Richard Widmark who died today at 93. And just after my tenth (eleventh?) viewing of one of my favorite film noir, that daylight ménage à trois (well, ménage à trois of intimidation, which only makes it more fascinating) -- "Road House" -- just when I was really wrapping my head around my obsession with both the movie and that hot blonde laughing lunatic of menace and twisted sex appeal, he ups and leaves me. One of motion pictures greatest actors, an icon of film noir and an intelligent, decent man in real life has left us. Richard Widmark died Monday at the age of 93-years-old . An actor who stunned audiences (and earned his one and only Oscar nomination) with his film debut as the giggling psychopath Tommy Udo in Henry Hathaway's "Kiss of Death," a character who, in the film's most notorious scene, pushes an old woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs, Widmark worked a long career filled with intriguing, daring roles that left a permanent impression on the movie-going public. So much, in fact, that Tommy Udo clubs formed around the country at various colleges, honoring the maniac for not taking any guff from women, men or life itself -- no matter how venal and self destructive he was. But that was part of Widmark's power and subversion -- you enjoyed his lunatics. But his career wasn't all about hassling little old ladies, he also helped create some of film noir's most immortal characters including, in my mind two ultimate noir anti-hero ico ... Hollywood actor Richard Widmark dies at age 93, represented Hollywood's heyday. Richard Widmark , best known for his Academy Award-nominated performance as a giggling, grinning gangster in the 1947 film noir classic Kiss of Death and as an NYPD policeman in the 1970s TV program Madigan , represents a Hollywood long gone and greatly missed, where on-camera performers and others involved in making films saw themselves as professionals, not artists—and succeeded in creating real art much more often than today's more overtly ambitious and politically active generation. Madigan was based on a very good film directed by Donald Siegel, which is well worth seeing . For more on Widmark and his career, see the AP story . ...
