I am currently on my third cup of coffee, my eyes won’t stop begging me to close them, and I am suppressing yawns approximately every other second. Why am I so tired today? Developers focused on VoIP and messaging applications should take note of a post today on our sister site WebWorkerDaily, about a newly open API from Fring . As more and more open source developers are focusing on software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps online, free ways to integrate VoIP, messaging and telephony tools can add a lot of value. We've previously covered Ribbit's open telephony APIs from this perspective. According to WWD, "the Fring API offers developers the ability to build Fring add-ons, with access to core services like talk, chat, presence, and file transfer." Check it out , although we agree that the iPhone SDK and Google's Android may woo more mobile developers. A startup and efforts from stalwarts are bringing users closer to truly mobile customer management. "It's about time. Salespeople have always lived on the road, and it makes no end of sense to be able to connect wirelessly with the rich information stored in CRM systems back in the office," Bill Snyder writes in this installment of Tech's bottom line. What Snyder is referring to is beyond the basics that BlackBerry's currently enable. Companies the likes of SAP, SugarCRM and Ribbit are pushing deeper into mobility. "It's likely that there are still bugs and broader technical issues standing between a... READ MORE ... Source: www.heraldtribune.com --- 19 days ago

Recently we've been discussing open source tools for software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications and the good fit that many people perceive there to be for open source and SaaS. As part of GigaOm's Structure 08 conference today, our sister site has an interview with Salesforce founder Parker Harris . Salesforce is proprietary, but is a stunning example of SaaS success. Also check out the Structure panel on next-generation infrastructure for new entrepeneurs , and AMR Research's thoughts on disruptive technologies and trends . Finally, check out a panel of top luminaries discussing harnessing growth online, including input from Meebo on open source. --> Trackback URL for this post: http://ostatic.com/trackback/166319 Related Activities Comments (0) Post a Comment Ask a Question Related Blog Posts Ribbit Proves an Important Point for Open Web Telephony APIs ( 1 comment ) ... This morning we had the Ribbit team on the call. Photo courtesy of iStockphoto, Ryan Lane Jaduka originally released their APIs for their telephony platform over a year ago , which can easily be used to integrate with other applications. Open the platform, let the masses create their own voice mashups, or so the theory went. Developers signed up, alright, but they didn't create much. While the APIs are still there and you can sign up for their developer program, Jaduka switched strategies, providing custom applications to enterprises on their own. The end result? Over 4 million minutes of voice traffic a month . Makes me wonder how many of Ribbit's more than 2,000 participants in their development program are actually developing money-making applications. It also makes me wonder if they have a plan B, because developers and an API aren't a business model. See full article .
