Running into fiery, smoke-filled buildings, being on the job 24 hours straight, and risking your life for people you might not even know isn’t a career choice that’s right for everyone. About 35 years ago, it wasn’t even a thought in Frank Angileri’s mind. After he graduated high school, all he wanted to do was become a car mechanic. But early in his career, Angileri became friends with a co-worker who was a volunteer in what is now the Oakbrook Terrace Fire Department. “He would bring in his radio, and I would listen to his calls,” Angileri said. “It sounded very interesting.” His co-worker told him that the village of Lombard had part-time firefighters and urged him to apply. He applied and was brought on part time in August 1976. Two years later, he applied for a full-time position and began Sept. 20, 1978. Thirty years later, he’s still glad he made the switch. “The adrenaline rush of responding to someone else’s emergency is pretty gratifying,” he said. “To go and handle someone’s emergency for them is very satisfying.” After retiring, it isn’t the calls he said he misses as much as the people he went on the calls with. “It’s like being away from home but being with your family,” he said of working firefighter hours of 24 hours on the job with the same people every third day. “Being in the firehouse with the same guys each and every shift, you build some great bonds.” One of the bonds he created was with Jim Plunket, public e ...
