Chef Joshua Siegel took a DIY approach to open his neighborhood place, then built a menu with integrity and charm. THESE days it usually takes a minimum of half a million dollars to open even the smallest Restaurant in Los Angeles. For a young chef dreaming of his or her own Restaurant, doing it on the cheap means going for a small space in an under-serviced neighborhood, forgoing the edgy design and pricey PR firm, and doing most of the cooking -- and everything else -- yourself. As part of a growing movement of modest chef-owned neighborhood restaurants, the Park in Echo Park opened in March with a budget of $100,000. It may not be able to boast plush banquettes or water features, not to mention Christofle flatware or Riedel glasses -- but it makes up for it with pluck and a menu realistically priced for the times. ...

Fantastic strategy game dying for expansion packsUnlike that Hell's Kitchen dud of a game, this game is truly fantastic. I have this game, purchased elsewhere and whilst I am disappointed it took this fantastic gaming site to finally showcase it here after so long, I am just glad it is here above all else. The concept is simple; played The Sims 2 before? Like the Open For Business, you get an empty building and you decorate it all you want. Check out other tips from other websites for cheats so that you can just get on with the game, unless you want the thrill of achieving goals. I play it to run a Restaurant, pure and simple and even without the goals, seeing the profit going up is just quite enough. The graphics are fantastic. The food looks delicious, the cooking all quite authentic and the best had to be the sound; it really feels like a Restaurant. Turn your volume up and hear the clicking, the wine glasses, etc. However slow computers will suffer and it is unfair to criticise this game purely on the fact your computer does not match the requirements needed to run the game. You get to hire/fire staff, yourself a chef too, design your own menu, get new recipes and all. It is more than a time management game; it is simply a game of commerce; how to do business. Whilst some aspects are not practical and is by no means perfect, for what it is worth, this game could be the beginning of a whole lot of fantastic ideas. This game is dying ...

Author: Anthony C. Review of: China Phoenix I have been a regular customer of this Restaurant since 1992 . I made a conscious decision as of July 2008 to stop patronizing this Restaurant due to its management catering to a changing clientele in its bar area that is so distruptive that I can't believe anyone in business would allow this to continue. The "ghetto" talk heard in the dining room from the bar is filled with overwhelming fowl language, loud yelling and laugher, and simply disgusting. I have witness bar fights and arguments and have even heard of the apparent drug trafficing taking place in the bar area from other regular customers. I have told the owner about this who seems to be very disconcerning about a my observations. I just can't believe this is taking place at this establishment which has been known for its good food for so many years. In addition to the changing atmosphere, the quality of service is now fair at best. Busy lunches are often left to only one server, tables are not cleaned off, and the food has become very inconsistent. The last dinner night there, July 9, 2008, I walked into not only a bar fight, but a dining room full of non cleared tables, one waitress, and other distressed customers who were sharing similar feelings about the changes taking place. ...

This week the Times’s Frank Bruni opines on Scarpetta (pictured), the new Meatpacking District Italian Restaurant from Scott Conant (L’Impero, Alto) that the Village Voice loved and the Sun disdained . Bruni bestows a big three stars, raving about the unassuming dish of spaghetti, tomato and basil: “However Mr. Conant is choosing and cooking the Roma tomatoes with which he sauces his house-made spaghetti, he’s getting a roundness of flavor and nuance of sweetness that amount to pure Mediterranean bliss.” Also in the Times, Julia Moskin surveys Chinese food in Flushing, where “the dumplings are juicier, the noodles springier, the butter cookies flavored with a bit of salty green seaweed.” For the Voice, Robert Sietsema voices mixed emotions on Sakae Sushi, one of those conveyor belt sushi places: “While facile items wander the belt like lost refugees, more sophisticated choices are available only by special order. When faced with one of the assortments, which feature as many as 47 pieces ($69.95), you'll find the quality uneven. And why are spring rolls included?” Meanwhile, the Voice’s Sarah DiGregorio advises you to “get all the farmhouse chic you can swallow at Forge and Hundred Acres,” two “haute barnyard” restaurants downtown. “Both serve hard lemonade and a cucumber-gin cooler. Both will change their menus seasonally. Forge is Hundred Acres' more expensive, amped-up, and posh cousin.” Speaking of Forge, Danyelle Freeman at the Da ...

What makes a Restaurant a success? Food alone does not cut it but the ambiance and service are of equal relevance. While the food in Via Milano , a Bangalore-based Italian Restaurant run by Italian expats was reasonably good, it had an impersonal feel to it and the service sucked. The Salmon was subtle and tasty. The spaghetti and shrimp were good but there was no accompanying bread basket with the main course. We had to remind the waiter to serve it and by then we were already midway through our meal. The waiters were completely spaced out. We had to be on the lookout to catch their eye to get even basic needs met. What bugged me was the socialist mentality of waiters hovering over the ' gora ' tables while 'naturally' ignoring the desis . One table had three waiters grouped around it. How hard was the decision making? Once we had finished dinner, our plates were taken in a rather haphazard manner; a few taken by one waiter and another returning to look under napkins in case the side plates were left behind. I was weirded out. Our coffee orders were mixed up and far from feeling at home at their pristine white 50s-style lounge, I wanted to leave as soon as possible. Which by the way took another fifteen minutes since they forgot to return our bill till we reminded them that we had been waiting for a long time for the card and check. Instead of Via Milano , I recommend Fiorano in Koramangala where the service is far better. Anothe ...
