SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Research In Motion was upgraded from an underperform, or sell, rating to hold Tuesday morning by Needham & Co. In a note to clients, analyst Charlie Wolf pointed to the recent sell-off on the company's shares, which have plunged from a high of $148 in mid-June to their current range of $63-$64. Wolf noted that he put the stock on a sell rating because of his belief that the new 3G iPhone from Apple Inc. would eat into sales of RIM's popular BlackBerry line. "Recent data suggest that iPhone sales are in fact materially higher than initial forecasts. However, we now believe that RIM's share price more than compensates for any slowdown in the growth of BlackBerry sales in the consumer market that might occur in the November quarter," he wrote. ...

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Research In Motion was upgraded to a market outperform, or buy, rating by JMP Securities Tuesday morning. In a note to clients, analyst Samuel Wilson cited the recent sell-off that has cost the company more than one-third of its market value since reporting second fiscal quarter results last week. "We believe the recent sharp sell off in Research in Motion presents investors with an opportunity to purchase a high quality company at a reduced price," wrote Wilson, who put an $80 price target on the shares. Shares of RIM were trading up 5% at $64.85 early Tuesday morning. ...

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Research In Motion and Motorola were both downgraded to hold from buy at Citi as the "already competitive" handset market is entering a more difficult phase on slowing consumer and enterprise and increased marketing and subsidy spending needed to support new product launched. Mark McQueen ( Wellington Financial ) submits: ImClone, Wachovia, WaMu, Lehman and Merrill Lynch are just a few of the names that have been picked off by the M&A angels over the past few weeks. A short year ago, each was fiercely independent with a seemingly bright future. For a variety of reasons, each is now (or soon to be) a subsidiary of a larger firm. It wasn’t all that long ago (June 2008) that Research In Motion (RIMM) ((TSE:RIM)) was sporting a market capitalization of $83 billion. As of tonight, the market cap has shrunk to $32.5 billion. Depending on which equity Research analysts you believe, RIM is trading at 10-15 times 2010 earnings. A few weeks ago, these same analysts thought that 30-35x was an appropriate figure. My, how times change. Complete Story » ...

Mark McQueen ( Wellington Financial ) submits: The original post (” Does RIM’s weak share price bring on a takeover bid? ” October 8-08) has generated lots of buzz , and I wanted to add a few points for further grist for the mill: I started writing the original post at 4:17 a.m. (woke up when the neighbor’s home alarm went off) or so Wednesday morning, but the post ran around 9:39 a.m. on Wednesday. At that point, Research In Motion (RIMM) was trading around C$60. For the good of the Canadian tech ecosystem, I don’t want the notional Microsoft (MFST)/RIM M&A deal to happen, and made that point crystal clear in the original post. Obviously, Jim and Mike are crucial to RIM’s success (as I said in the original post), and as Duncan Stewart reminded Reuters on Thursday. However, despite their large share holdings they don’t own enough of the company to be able to block a hostile takeover if their institutional shareholders wanted to tender. Naturally, MSFT would want (need?) Jim and Mike to stay with RIM going forward, but it isn’t clear if MSFT believes anyone in the world is essential to any business; Bill Gates recently stepped back from a daily executive role at MSFT, didn’t he? Moreover, it appears to all shareholders that Jim and Mike currently work not for the money but for the joy of it. If MSFT could ensure that would continue, why would they not want to stay with RIM if it were a subsidiary of MSFT? Would they threaten to wa ...

Larry Dignan ( ZDNet ) submits: Research in Motion (RIMM) has launched its Storm touch handheld, and it is critical to the company’s long-term plans. RIM, along with Vodafone (VOD) and Verizon (VZ) Wireless, launched the Storm on Wednesday.. The phone, a rival to Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 3G, signals a product barrage for the company. Filed under: Rumors , Research in Motion (RIMM) With the stock prices of thousands of public companies taking a very large nosedive in recent weeks, it stands to reason that some companies with little debt and who're also flush with cash may be seeking to turn on their acquisition engines and snap something up. With Research In Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM ) down almost 90 points from its 52-week high set just this summer, could the email addict support company be ripe for a buyout ? Who would want to gain RIM's immense cellphone/email subscriber base that seems to keep outperforming larger competitors? Think Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ). The company just said that it is experiencing higher costs due to the launch of newer smartphones (like the Storm), and if you take that with the pounding the overall market has taken, RIMM could be left as a willing acquisition to the company that failed to snatch up Yahoo, Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO ) earlier this year. Microsoft's Windows Mobile is a venerable mobile operating system but does not have the core business email user base of the cachet of the Blackberry. At the $60 per share level, RIM would be a $34 billion takeover, which is still quite large for Microsoft to swallow. Is RIM worth it? You decide. Microsoft would seem to have a more logical fit with an RIM acquisition (in its entirely) than by gobbling up Yahoo and having so much overlap in the process. If the future really is mo ...

Research In Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry smart-phone devices, reported second quarter fiscal 2009 financial results (ended August) that were slightly below our estimates. We expect the smart-phone device market to gain momentum should economic conditions improve, and as demand for portable wireless access remains firm on a global market basis.
RIMM's channel sales expansion initiatives are also considered an impetus for meaningful top-line growth as the company is on the verge of introducing a series of next-generation BlackBerry smart-phones.
In view of the company's financial condition, we remain comfortable that the company can execute on reaching additional market share, especially in untapped emerging markets. The recent decline in current stock valuation is now considered more favorable from an investment standpoint as we maintain our Buy recommendation with a reduced price target. ...
