A federal judge has ordered the EPA to determine whether to list the polar bear as an endangered species by May 15th, delighting those who would limit human activity -- including energy development -- in vast reaches of America's arctic. It's another example of environmentalist and anti-energy activist attempting achieve their goals not through the political or public policy process -- where the extreme agenda would fail -- but through the courts. Law professor and radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt has been an effective and impassioned advocate for environmental policies that recognize man's place in the world. The impact of a decision to list the bear would be vast, and the costs to the economy only dimly perceived even by the industries which would be immediately impacted. The short summary is that any activity that leads to the emission of greenhouse gases and requires a federal permit would immediately be subject to a new level of permitting and federal review (and demands for "mitigation") under Section 7 of the ESA. If the petition to list is rejected, the environmental groups that generated more than 600,000 comments in favor of the listing will sue. PBS talk show host Charlie Rose turned to the Reverend Wright issue on Wednesday night. Former New York Times music critic Kelefa Sanneh insisted the fuss over Wright comments like the government inventing AIDS for black genocide were a "Red Herring," that when you look at Wright’s old speeches and books, "there’s not much in there that’s hugely controversial," and even when he gets political, "he’s not making wildly controversial statements by and large." Sanneh also seemed to insist blacks couldn’t be racists.
Sanneh began by insisting that the Wright issue is being overblown, because there were radical things that Martin Luther King said that "would generate enormous controversy today." ( Brent Bozell touched on that, the 1967 King speech at Riverside Church alleging both white and black American soldiers were brutalizing Vietnamese civilians.) But Rose was tough enough to respond: "But I want to know what that [King speech] was that’s equivalent to saying AIDS is a government conspiracy to kill black children?"
Sanneh, who’s now with The New Yorker magazine, where he’s written an article on Wright and his church, began spinning: "Well, two things. One is, I think the AIDS comment is interesting because it’s really a small part. It’s not as if he wrote books about this. This is something that was kind of buried in one of his speeches. Yo won’t find it in any of his books. And that’s not really what he is about."
