If you were putting money on it, you'd have to put your dough on the Rangers not re-signing Marlon Byrd. The reality is that this club has depth in the outfield and Byrd cost $3 million this season. (Not to mention this club's financial situation.) He's an unrestricted free agent and wants a multi-year deal, as most free agents who will be 32 at the end of the season would. What would it take to keep him? Tough to say. Would he cost $5 million per season on a two-year deal? Would he be willing to sign for his same salary if he got a guaranteed three-year deal? Maybe. The bottom line: It will cost the Rangers more money and they'll have to give him some security too. There's no question Byrd wants to stay. "I've seen what's been built up in this organization for three years," Byrd said. "We have a winning team, and in 2010 and 2011 we'll keep restocking. I love what the front offie is doing with JD, Thad and Nolan and the coaching staff and leadership here. This is the team that gave me a chance. Hopefully something will work out and I stay here, but it's tough because you have so many great outfielders in Triple-A and here right now. I don't know if it will be a fit." Byrd looks around and sees plenty of depth at his position. Nelson Cruz, Josh Hamilton, David Murphy, Brandon Boggs, Julio Borbon and even Greg Golson will be a part of this organization in 2010. It's not difficult to imagine the club saving money and letting Byrd go. ... Source: www.dallasnews.com --- 15 hours ago
