Thousands of spectators annually attend Byron Dragway’s World Power Wheelstanding Championship because there’s always a chance they will witness something never before seen. That was the case Sunday. The event was postponed for the first time in its 14-year history because of Rain, and was rescheduled for Oct. 26. “It’s part of racing,” said Corey Rushlow, who drove six hours from St. Paul, Minn., with three friends to watch the championship. “You never know if the weather is going to suck.” Only about 3,000 fans were at the track when the event was officially canceled at noon. The forecast of Rain kept many fans away as the championship have drawn about 10,000 spectators in recent years. “Usually at 5 in the morning, we have a minimum of 30 cars waiting at the main gate,” said track co-owner B.J. Vangsness. “This year there were just four.” Rain started falling at 9 a.m. but stopped long enough for the Byron staff to get the track ready to run on by 11 a.m. However, the Rain resumed, and track officials announced the postponement. “It’s disappointing,” spectator Seth Mason of Waupun, Wis., said as he sat in his truck waiting in line for a refund. “I always take my vacation this week so I can come here. For the first time in its 26-year history in Geneva, the Festival of the Vine was a washout, thanks to unrelenting rains. “We’ve had weekends (in past years) where we’ve had one day of Rain, and times where it rained in the morning and cleared up by the afternoon,” said Jean Gaines, president of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. “But this is the first time it’s ever been totally rained out.” Even the Flavor Fare dining tent at State and North Fourth streets was shuttered because of the weather. The tent area is like a Taste of Geneva with local restaurants offering small portions of items from their menus. Wines from around the world also are served while entertainment is featured on stage. “The deluge wasn’t safe for the tent,” Gaines said. Despite the weather, a few people did trickle in Friday. “You get those who say, ‘It’s my favorite festival. I’ll come Rain or shine,’” Gaines said. Though some restaurateurs suggested rescheduling the festival to this weekend, Gaines said financially it’s impossible, because of the time it takes to set up the festival, and the costs of advertising, tents and entertainment. “There’s no way to re-create it,” she said. “It was best to close it and ‘better luck next year.’” Beekeeper Charlie Wenk of Winfield was invited to come this year, along with fellow beekeeper Clyde Eggett of West Chicago, to entertain attendees with the unique workings of a hive and let them sample fresh honey. “I drove over the ...
