Burglars hit a Dallas Fire-Rescue Station again Monday night, the latest in a string of burglaries targeting the department and its communications equipment . The culprit hit Station 27 in the 8400 block of Douglas Avenue, near Northwest Highway, in North Dallas some time between Monday morning and Tuesday morning and made off with a handheld Radio, fireman's helmet, department gear bag and flashlight, according to a Dallas police report. It is unclear from the report whether this incident might be tied to the earlier burglaries. Fire officials had vowed to tighten security following the earlier crimes last month. Department spokeswoman Sherrie Lopez said today they may have to reinforce that message to their employees. "Just because you think you might be in a part of town that is not susceptible to theft, that's just not true," Ms. Lopez said. "Anybody can be affected by crime in any part of town." Wichita-based Steckline Communications has purchased KGYN, 1210-AM, in Guymon, Okla. The 10,000-watt Oklahoma panhandle Station has a long tradition of country music and agricultural information for the five-state region of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. Steckline will continue the country music tradition, according to a news release, and will add agricultural programming from the sister Mid-America Ag Network. Allo, le Riff. I just got back from a quick little DJ tour of Canada, eh, and on this jaunt I had the opportunity to play in Montreal for the first time. Turns out Montreal isn't unlike San Francisco, strangely at odds with North America but not quite European, culturally vibrant but chock full of homeless, except there they ask for change in French. In addition to Paul's Boutique and tasty Portuguese grills , one of my happiest Montreal discoveries was CISM/89.3 FM , the Radio Station of l'Université de Montréal. I'm not sure why it was so good, exactly; perhaps its focus on musique en français works as a kind of limiting factor allowing a wider creative freedom within that zone, or maybe French music in general is just really awesome right now. But there was something uniquely Quebecois about CISM's playlist--with Paris obsessed with the latest fashions in dance music, CISM is a happily grungy alternative, shifting between soaring indie rock, wobbly dancehall, avant-garde electro and bouncy hip-hop. My French is terrible, but the DJs' Quebec accents are strong enough to be amusing even to the uninitiated, which is a little bonus bit of entertainment. Thankfully, the Station is actually kind of professional, with some solid production and a good compressed sound.
