Rachel Maddow , liberal MSNBC pundit, was supposed to get Chris Matthews' show when his contract ran out, but MSNBC decided to capitalize on election fever and complete her transformation from feminist Rhodes Scholar AIDS policy wonk to television star right away. They gave her Dan Abrams show, even though everyone at the network loves Dan and his show's been doing well. But he's a soft-spoken legal analyst and she's a phenom in the making. She's the Keith Olbermann liberals won't be embarrassed to admire! Keith, stentorian wiseass and former sportscaster, is clearly a raving egomaniac. When his ire is directed outward at figures deserving of his scorn, it's incredibly watchable television. But you cannot ever escape the obvious fact that the man, admirable moral center or no, is a smug jerk in private and public life. Which is a plus in televised punditry, but it's exhausting. Maddow, smart and cool, is now poised to make the most of an Obama presidency. She presents a perfect liberal alternative to a Bill O'Reilley or Sean Hannity: not because, like them, she's a bullying cheerleader for Obama and his party (that's a little more Olbermann), but because she's principled enough to fight for the Democrats when they're right and criticize them when they're wrong, without engaging in the partisan horseshit of official party mouthpieces like Carville and Begala. (This, by the way, is the important difference between the liberals of MSNBC ...

MSNBC sent out the release on yesterday's news , that Rachel Maddow would be getting her own show on the network. Calling it "a smart look at politics, pop culture and all the day's top stories," the show will air at 9pmET replacing Verdict with Dan Abrams . Insiders tell us the staff of the Abrams show will stay on to produce Maddow and that prime time VP Bill Wolff will run the show. Wolff's relationship with Maddow goes back to his days as the EP of The Situation with Tucker Carlson on which Maddow was a regular guest. Maddow, who had a successful 9-day fill-in gig on Countdown in July, was on with Keith Olbermann last night talking about the new show, which at the time, didn't have a name: " The Rachel Maddow Show is taken. It's on Air America," she said, speaking of her nightly radio show, which will continue. Apparently, the name became available. Click continued to read the release... continued... Me- OW Maddow! Photo: WikiCommons Yesterday it was announced that Rachel Maddow, the funny Air America radio personality, would take over Dan Abrams's 9-10 p.m. slot on MSNBC. How was word officially spread? By Keith Olbermann himself, Maddow's mentor, on the ultraliberal blog collective Daily Kos — not through a press release, not through an on-air announcement, not through a conference call with MSNBC head honcho Phil Griffin. The Times ' Bill Carter only got his own story about the change together three hours later . Things of note about this change: • Before we were totally gay (and reverse gay) for Rachel Maddow. Now we may actually be a little bit tranny for her. • Dan Abrams, who was the former general manager of MSNBC and will go back to a more administrative role, is being a really good sport about this. We hear the network really wants him to stay, but TVNewser suspects he'll leave after his contract runs out, as he has interest from other networks. • Olbermann is more than a little bit proud of his role in all this. " Yes, I had something to do with it ," he crowed in his Daily Kos post. • Olbermann seems to now be officially in control of the new direction of MSNBC. "Keith has wanted someone who agrees with him after his show. He was pushing to get Joe Scarborough out, and that continued after Dan took that time slot," said a source with knowledge of the decision-making process. "It's not about Dan or about Joe, it's ...

Filed under: News , Programming , Reality-Free If you watch MSNBC for the politics fix, no doubt you have seen Rachel Maddow. She's one of the talking heads, a politically savvy woman who has been featured on shows like Hardball with Chris Matthews and Countdown with Keith Olbermann. In fact, she's been Keith's regular fill-in this summer, a sure sign that she's MSNBC's star on the rise. The network has just announced that Rachel Maddow has been chosen to replace MSNBC's Dan Abrams , bumping his show Verdict out of the primetime lineup. Maddow is getting a great spot on MSNBC, right after Countdown at 9 p.m. Abrams is not getting kicked to the curb. Like when Tucker Carlson lost his show and remained one of the net's pundits. Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com Rachel Maddow Replacing Dan Abrams On MSNBC Effective Immediately Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times ' Bill Carter reports. Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow's debut as the host of her own MSNBC show : The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8. Yesterday, Bill Carter of the New York Times broke the news that MSNBC is giving Rachel Maddow, their talented and popular 35-year-old liberal commentator, her own show, which will replace Dan Abrams' Verdict at 9 P.M. The new show, according to The Times , will start on September 8. Mr. Abrams will stay on at the network as a legal correspondent and substitute anchor. His last show will be Thursday night. Following Keith Olbermann's Countdown at 8 P.M., Ms. Maddow's new show will give MSNBC a solid two-hour block of liberal politics every weeknight, and will further solidify the cable news channel's unstated strategy of making itself the place for liberal political analysis in primetime.  read more » ...

MSNBC has decided that Rachel Maddow, who became an exclusive political analyst this year, is ready for a prime time hour of her own. “The Rachel Maddow Show” will debut at 9 p.m. Sept. 8, after the presidential nominating conventions. Ms. Maddow” will continue to host her similarly titled show weeknights on liberal Air America at 6 p.m. EDT, a time just ripe for plugging her MSNBC vehicle. The current occupant, “Verdict With Dan Abrams” will have its last telecast Thursday night. Mr. Abrams will continue his role as chief legal correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC. He will expand his role as a contributor to "Dateline NBC" and "Today" and do some dayside anchoring on MSNBC. In June 2006, Mr. Abrams was tapped to be general manager of the cable channel, a role he relinquished 15 months later to return to hosting a weeknights show. Ms. Maddow has proved, in her stints as a substitute for Keith Olbermann on “Countdown,” that she has Mr. Olbermann’s way with words but a less polarizing delivery. "Rachel is unbelievably talented and brilliant; her breadth and depth of knowledge of politics and news is astonishing and I'm so excited to give her a place to really showcase what she can do," said MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in Wednesday’s announcement. "We've established MSNBC as the place for politics and the destination for viewers who want the smartest take on the day's developments. Adding Rachel into our prime-time lineup make ...
