Have you ever felt like you may have been born in the wrong century?   I always wanted to be a pioneer girl.   When I was growing up my favorite books were the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.   Then, in my early teens I was able to watch the Little House on the Prairie TV show.  When my daughters were in Kindergarten and third grade I found the Prairie Primer unit study by Margie Gray.   I don’t know who was more excited to dig into it, myself or my girls!   In one year we traveled through all 9 of the Little House books…from the Big Woods of Wisconsin to De Smet , South Dakota …from about the time Laura was 4 years old to the First Four Years of Laura and Almonzo’s marriage.   And all the joys and tears in between.   Margie has done a great job in incorporating all the things we love about unit studies into one of the most enjoyable, fascinating studies our family has ever done.   The topics are interesting and varied.   They range from: Bible Concepts and Building Character (Comparing Ourselves, God’s Umbrella of Protection, Struggle with Sin Nature…), Bible Memory (various verses), Crafts (Candle Making, Moccasin Making…), Health (Causes of Diseases, Effects of Tobacco and Alcohol, Food Groups, Rabies…), History, Government, Social Studies and Geography (American Folk Songs, Family History, Geographical Terms, Indians, Louisiana Purchase, Presidents, States and Capitals, Woman’s Suffrage…), History – Biographies (Clara B ...

Connie Hendricks of Chatham noticed last week that her dog, Buster, was lethargic and not eating. Because of this unusual behavior for her Chihuahua-Pekingese mix, Hendricks immediately brought Buster to a local veterinarian, not knowing she may have saved Buster from an excruciating death. Veterinarian Clyde Dunphy, a part-owner of Capitol Illini Veterinary Services, diagnosed 8-month-old Buster with canine parvovirus, a disease that eats away at the lining of the small intestine and is a leading killer of dogs younger than 1. Dunphy usually sees one to two cases of parvo a month but has diagnosed six cases in the past 10 days. “I think we’re seeing enough of it that we’re seeing an outbreak,” he said. There were no obvious contacts among the six dogs, two of whom have died because of the ravages of the disease, and other Springfield veterinarians told The State Journal-Register that they aren’t seeing higher-than-normal numbers of parvo cases. But they and Dunphy said dog owners need to be more aware of the symptoms of parvo and the need for vaccinations to prevent it. “It’s probably the most painful, devastating death from disease,” said veterinarian Frank Coble, owner of Coble Animal Hospital. Dunphy’s encounter with parvo-infected animals also highlights the broader problem of pets not receiving the shots they need. An estimated 50 percent of Sangamon County’s 50,000 to 60,000 dogs don’t get Rabies shots and other recommended ...

Yesterday our wonderful vet-who-makes-house-calls came to check out Mr. Jones and Gracie and give them their Rabies and distemper shots. Our cats sort of think they're dogs; they come running to greet newcomers instead of slinking under a bed at the sound of the door like other cats. So here's why Dr. Jake gets the big bucks: As the cats approached, he smiled and said, "I still always think of them as kittens; I can't think of anyone besides George as your big cat." Julie asked, "Who's George?" I said, "He's the cat we had before you were born. He was the greatest cat in the world." Julie asked, "Why?" Jake said, "There was just something special about George. He had this quality...." to which I added, "He had true soul." And then we talked about the glory of George for a while. This is a cat who died 12 years ago. And he was not even the most recent cat we had who died; Weezy lived another 4 years beyond George. We loved Weezy, but suffice it to say that she was not George. (Or make that: Weezy, I served with George; I knew George; George was a friend of mine. Weezy, you're no George.)Everyone thinks their own dead pet was the greatest ever; our vet knows that we're right.Oh, and he also makes the kids crack up with endless cat-butt and cat-poop jokes. So there's that. ...

Later in the afternoon, after returning from the hospital, I talked to my mother. She called to let us know that not only did a detective need to talk to me, but she had a visit from the neighbor, as well. Ronnie, the neighbor, had came up to my parent’s house, and nervously paced around. “I shot that thing, ya know. If it has Rabies, I don’t want it around my place”, he informed my mother. When my mother told me this, I was incredulous. “How about the Rabies testing then?”, I asked her. At this point in the conversation, my father started screaming at my mother that she needed to keep her mouth “shut”. And, I became incensed. I felt like things were slowly building up, and felt that so many things had happened because of me. ...
