OK, and after this, I promise no more bashing on Nintendo's press Conference. But I used to work in internal PR for a very large software company (that may or may not have produced products that rhyme with Shmorton Shminternet Shmecurity) and we'd go to RSA, host our own user Conference, all that stuff. What I mean to say is that I've seen some eye-rolling moments in keynotes, when top executives try to get hip. But I've never seen anything close to this. The -Minus World sums it all up with the five most embarrassing moments. Yes, No. 1 is DJ Ravi flailing away like a toddler batting at a mobile. But the other four are alternately hilarious/pathetic too, and I think any one of them, by themselves, would have made it a trainwreck. Anyway, enjoy. See you back here tomorrow. Digging through my e-mail, I came across some analysis by Shavlik that summarized the company's findings of polls conducted in April at the RSA Conference and Infosecurity Europe. Shavlik makes security, compliance and update tools aimed primarily at Windows systems, so unsurprisingly, the poll results showed a need for the company's products. And just because this is so, the conclusions of the analysis coincide with a position that I've advocated for some time: that a well-managed network is a foundation of a secure network. The survey analysis supplied by Mark Shavlik, CEO of Shavlik Technologies, highlighted that "Companies are increasingly recognizing the need to automate operations in order to streamline compliance as an ongoing business process. But too many organizations still don't have a standard approach, which leaves gaps in their security infrastructure ... solutions that simplify, automate, and provide better control over security and compliance management." The survey results of 491 Conference attendees showed that just over 75 percent indicated that they were either concerned or highly concerned over compliance with specific mandates such as PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), ISO 27002, or Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Can you imagine having a Conference intended to represent the Canadian IT security landscape and not have Symantec among the exhibitors? What about Microsoft? If you’re attending InfoSecurity Canada 2008 , don’t bother looking for Bell Canada or RSA, either. I almost didn’t notice the absence of these industry mainstays because the quality of the sessions themselves is pretty good. Much like SecTor , the upstart Conference launched last year, InfoSecurity Canada seems to be gradually moving away from vendor-driven product launches and more towards education and training. Which is all good. But the overall lack of support (the only platinum sponsor is a consulting firm; McAfee’s a bronze) suggests these kind of events may face a struggle for long-term survival. The easy argument to make here is that security should not be divorced from the rest of the business. In one session I attended, a gentleman who works for a provincial agency said his managers prefer to outsource their IT security, and he wondered how the speaker at one of the sessions would suggest he change their attitude. “I have no easy answer for you,” the speaker said, going on to recommend that somehow the security experts need to get in front of the CEOs and other senior managers, instead of preaching to the converted at events like InfoSecurity Canada.
