Around 140 CE the Panathenaic Stadium was restored by Herodes Atticus, giving its current horseshoe shape. It was 204.07m long, 33.35m wide, and had a seating capacity of around 50,000 people. After the 1870 excavation that discovered it, people decided to restore it once again for the newly created Olympic Games, announced on June 23, 1894, by Baron Pierre de Coubertin speaking at the Sorbonne in Paris. ... Astoria: Some folks are psyched that one of the contestants on the new season of Project Runway , Stella Zotis, is from Astoria. She brings it old-school with that Noo Yawk accent and rock-type duds for Debbie Harry on her résumé, but her defeatist attitude in episode one didn't exactly represent for her hood, either … right? [ AstoriaNYC ] Bedford-Stuyvesant: Politically charged stickers abound here, including those calling for Dinkins's reelection. Bring back the gorgeous mosaic-meister! [ Newyorkshitty ] Carroll Gardens: No sooner did the hood's long-fought-for new zoning law (which redefines the meaning of a "narrow" street) go into effect than a stop-work order was slapped on the controversial 360 Smith Street project, because it plans to be 70 feet high rather than the new limit, 55 feet. It's like the folks behind the project, which is only 20 percent done, will appeal the stoppage. [ Gowanus Lounge ] Fort Greene: It got rowdy last night at the big meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the weekly Sunday Brooklyn Flea here, with some anti-Flea locals playing the faith card (would a flea be allowed near a synagogue on the Jewish Sabbath, huh?) but with the anti-big-box, pro-small-biz tirade of State Senator Velmanette (best name!) Montgomery stealing the show. [ Racked ] Roosevelt Island: With Marymount College renting 35 student units here, taking its cue from Rockefeller University and the French Culinary Institute, is R ... by mairteenpak (Posted 2 hours ago) The collection of myths, known as the Bible , has different versions and interpretations of it, revered as truth by millions, around the world, has caused much misery, war, death, suffering delusion, false hope, and conflict, including on our own Island. What I find most incredible is that people actually believe this nonsense. The fact that they do at least for a while, is in my opinion, due to the fact that they are indoctrinated, and brainwashed at an early vulnerable age. This conclusion is supported by the general pattern of people questioning the Superstition as they age and tending to cast off their former beliefs as their mind develops. State support for Christianity was forthcoming because, the politically astute non believers, who formed the governments, believed it prudent, to feign belief and devoutness, for reasons of electoral popularity, as well as the fact that propagation of such superstition was thought to make people behave in a more moral way, then they might without such faith, and that they might be more easily governed. The Central articles of belief of the Christian Belief, are most unbelievable, likely, or plausible, and confound logic, common sense, and all reason. Christianity has no monopoly on unbelievability, in that all other religious God Theories are no more believable. Despite this followers of various religions have no difficulty in not believing in other Gods ... Source: www.centredaily.com --- 9 hours ago

*Islam to become Russia’s predominant RELIGION by 2050? * *22-07-2008* Pravda: Islam is likely to become the primary RELIGION in the Russian Federation by 2050 due to the high birth rate in Muslim republics. The current Chinese-led conquest of Russia’s Far East already seems to be a matter of immediate concern for the Kremlin. The ethnic birth rate disproportion in different regions of the country is another problem. The Muslim community may become the largest community by the middle of the current century. Therefore, Islam has all chances to become the predominant RELIGION in Russia. Ukrainian scientists of politics, Valery Chaliy and Mikhail Pashkov, believe that this is not the only challenge, which Russia has to face nowadays. “The Russian macroeconomic stability is being shattered with the high inflation rate and growing food prices. Considerable funds are being invested in state-run corporations and are being spent on social needs. Corruption restrains the growth of the national economy. Russia dropped from the 120th to the 14th place among 160 countries on Transparency International’s corruption list. Russian found itself in the company of Gambia, Indonesia and Togo at this point. Russia takes the humble 58th place on the list of 131 countries on the integral rating of the competitive ability of the economy for 2007. Islam is currently the second most widely professed RELIGION in the Russian Federation. It is impossible to provi ... Source: www.absolutepunk.net --- 1 day ago

(Another book review, this time from 2002 and the Journal of the History of Biology. Both books are still in print and worth reading) The simplicity (and adversarial nature) of the phrase "science versus RELIGION" belies the diversity of ways in which these two fields of knowledge can, and do, interact. Thanks to the work of Ian Barbour, four modes of interaction are now generally accepted (conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration). It has been realized that in these post-1859 times, RELIGION has had to face the radical reconfiguration of the human experience that appears to be required by the acceptance of modern scientific theories such as evolution, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism. However, within such an arrangement, one must ask how science is, if at all, modified by religious beliefs. As John Hedley Brooke notes in Science in Theistic Contexts , we must avoid essentializing "science" and "RELIGION," and imagining that our current boundaries would be acceptable to the scientists of times past. The two works under review offer potent illustrations of how scientific theory and religious belief have in the past influenced and affected each other, and we thus have no reason to imagine that this will not be the case in the future. France’s Council of State has denied citizenship to Faiza Silmi solely on the basis of her RELIGION. She wears a niqab, a facial veil that is worn by some Muslim women. The court stated that Silmi refused to "assimilate" and that her "radical" beliefs could not coexist with French culture and values. Silmi speaks French fluently, has four French-born children and is married to a French citizen. In 2004, France banned hijabs, a type of Muslim headscarf, in public schools. French President Sarkozy has put forth new legislation that requires immigrants to be tested on French values before they can come to France. "They say I wear the niqab because my husband told me so," she said. "I want to tell them: It is my choice. Yes, I am a practicing Muslim, I am orthodox. But is that not my right?" ... Theists and atheist will always argue. Its like a guy who likes white chocolate trying to convince the guy who hates white chocolate that it tastes great. I'm pretty much new enough to these volconvo debates but after only a couple of weeks you can notice that the same arguments about RELIGION are expounded post after post in increasingly more complex analogies and allegories. It seems obvious that the people who lead these debates are more than capable of realizing the ins and outs of both sides but consciously ignore what the other person is saying, boiling down to the canopy stand off of one of the following. (A) I believe that God exists (B) I believe that he doesn't exist Because of the overriding urge of both sides to treat any topic as an opportunity to prove or disprove their _*FUNDAMENTAL*_ belief in one of the above , all points of views in every particular "debate" about RELIGION seems to narrow down to those above 2 questions. It seems from nearly every religious thread here, that both sides for the most part are incapable of accepting contrasting beliefs over the existence of God. Thats not debating. Can people forget what they believe for th sake of debating the thread when it comes to RELIGION? Of course many thread pose the question of whether god exists or not so in those instances no..but many many topic here seem to be destroyed by the insistence of those adamant about their believe in the A and B above If I hear the ...
