We know that some of you got pretty excited when we mentioned that Doom 4 was announced back in May. That said, id's Todd Hollenshead and John Carmack got some face time with an eager audience who wanted to know more about Doom 4 . Their first revelation? The official announcement of Doom 4 , as if earlier reports of the game's existence weren't enough. Hollenshead noted that the game would have its signature trademarks intact. "There will be guns, blood, demons, and gibs," says id's CEO, and we're all glad they'll be there. After showing off a video trailer for Rage ( PC , PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 ), John Carmack took the stage to tell folks about how good the game would be, as well as his expectations for the game's different versions upon release. First off, Carmack promised that the game would "look like it's built on another engine" when compared to their other in-development game, Rage , which both use the id Tech 5 engine. Furthermore, he added that the game would use "three times the horsepower," making Doom 4 run at 30 frames per second, compared to Rage's 60 fps. More importantly, Carmack also said that the game would see a multi-platform release but appeared to stress the importance of the PC, saying that "By the the time that the next Doom game ships to consoles, PC will be light years ahead of current consoles." This gives many the impression that the game ought to look better on the PC than on the 360 or PS3 when i ...

Preview by Jeff “Finger” Buckland” Activision wasn’t quite ready to show off the new Wolfenstein by Raven and id Software at this year’s E3, but here at QuakeCon, that’s changed.  The game’s live, the game’s real, and from what I’ve seen of it in action, it looks like a worthy contender for one of the best games of either this year or next - depending, of course, on how you want to interpret the official “when it’s done” release date.  The Wolfenstein franchise started way back in 1992 with Wolfenstein 3-D, one of the most impressive-looking games made until that point and the game that really got the first person shooter genre going.  Sure, id Software technically had another game before it, and DOOM which followed was a lot more popular, but it was Wolf3D that really gave id the direction they knew they needed to take for years to come.  And it’s worked, with a string of excellent first-person hits.  And now, with developer Raven Software’s help, they’ll be reviving the franchise for a second time to create something utterly unique.  ...

Filed under: First Person Shooters , RPGs , Mobile We haven't played Doom RPG , so we're not exactly sure how meshing an id FPS with a role-playing game model will work. But we have to say that after watching the above QuakeCon footage of Wolfenstein RPG , we're at the very least intrigued. If we have one regret, it's that the game is coming to cell phones instead of Apple's sexy new behemoth . Sadly it seems like we'll have to wait for Carmack's " graphical tour de force " for a portable id game that doesn't look like straight yuck. Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...
