Filed under: Desktops Some seven months after AMD first tooted its horn about creating the " world's most advanced x86 CPU ," the Quad-Core Opteron is finally shipping. Effective today, consumers eager to wrap their brains around all that purported power can find the chips residing in a variety of HP machines (read: servers) as well as in systems from other "distributors, system integrators and specialized OEMs." Unfortunately, little is said about the widespread availability of the CPU beyond that, but at least it's getting out the door in one way or another, right? I guess it was inevitable, but after a lot of denial, AMD announced that it would remove 10 percent of its work force by the third quarter of 2008. For someone who runs AMD machines at home and loved the work they did to bring 64bit computing to the masses ( with the X64 chip architecture - instead of Itanium ) this is a real blow. I am sure that part of the reason was the delay in the Quad-Core Opteron Processor—Barcelona—and its Phenom desktop chips due to erratum within the silicon. Lets hope that they get back on track ASAP to ensure that this market keeps pushing really hard, and maintains the strong competition. ...

After significant delays caused by a design bug, AMD is now shipping Quad-Core "Barcelona" Opteron processors in volume. Barcelona processors were delayed back in December of last year because of an L3 cache bug which caused applications to fail.  Rather than ship processors containing the bug, AMD pulled them until the issue could be resolved, a move which at the time caused analysts to question whether AMD was capable of shipping these processors in high volumes. With the bug out of the way these Quad-Core processors will now be making their way to server OEMs such as Hewlett-Packard, Sun, IBM, and Dell.
