Sunday afternoon I was looking forward to watching my first-place Twins go for the sweep against the Kansas City Royals. I got my can of peanuts and can of Coke ready and turned on my high definition 46" LCD...I was ready! First disappointment.....The game isn't in HD. Oh well I think, it still looks better than the 13" tube TV upstairs. I turn the TV on just in time to see the starting lineups. Second disappointment.....Kubel is in right field, Lamb is at first, Adam Everett and Nick Punto are in the game together at the same time. Third disappointment.....Why in the heck is Punto batting second? We just take over first place and this is the lineup? I know that the players need a rest from time to time, but why is Morneau DHing? Is first base that strenuous? Oh well I figure, lets see what happens. All of a sudden Everett comes up with a couple of clutch base hits. WOW! Gardenhire is a genius! What a divine Puppet Master he is! Then I watch as Punto comes up time after time in crucial run producing situations. Four strike outs! This is why you cannot bat a ninth place batter second. What is the attraction with Punto? It takes a jack-of-all-trades to Master and be successful at puppetry. Puppeteers must be actors, sculptors, writers, costume and set designers and choreographers, as well as working the box office and doing public relations. That’s the way Mike Schwabe of the Village Puppeteers from Douglas put it. “It’s the last, true, all-around, Renaissance, circus-minded field,” Schwabe said. The group is putting on a Puppet show called “Lost in Storyland” at the Saugatuck Woman’s Club, 303 Butler St. in Saugatuck. The puppeteers have a final show remaining before it prepares for a holiday show in December. The final shows are at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Sept. 6. Schwabe and fellow puppeteer Larry Basgall have worked as puppeteers for more than 25 years, starting out in the Chicago area. They took the name Village Puppeteers after a newspaper called them that in an article. Schwabe and Basgall have a long history in the Chicago area and still have a nonprofit company in Chicago called Hystopolis Productions Inc. As a teenager, Schwabe became involved with the Friends of the Library Theater in Schaumburg, Ill., doing Shakespearean plays, sculpting and painting. “I decided to combine all of these things and go into puppetry,” Schwabe said. Puppet provides a mechanism for managing a heterogeneous cluster of Unix-like machines using a central configuration system and a declarative scripting language for describing machine configuration. The declarative scripting language abstracts away the many differences in various Unix-like operating systems. Puppet is used for server management by a number of startups including PowerSet , Joost and Slide . Typical Puppet Architecture In a system managed using Puppet, Pupper Master is the central system-wide authority for configuration and coordination. Manifests are propagated to the Puppet Master from a source external to the system. Each server in the system periodically polls the Puppet Master to determine if their configuration is up to date. If this is not the case, then the new configuration is retrieved and the changes described by the new manifest are applied. The Puppet instance running on each client can be considered to be made up of the following layers Each manifest is described in the Puppet Configuration Language which is a high level language for describing resources on a server and what actions to take on them.
