Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer and briefly took the lead in the NL batting race over the Braves' Chipper Jones, before falling back by less than a percentage point in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-3 victory over Atlanta on Sunday. Pujols was 8-for-10 with two homers and eight RBIs in the series, helping the Cardinals take two of three from the sagging Braves, who have dropped 12 of 14. ...

St . Louis - I just heard from the Cardinals clubhouse and Albert Pujols did go off on Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva (see my previous post) for his actions in the game tonight and said it did wake his team up and spur them to rally to win. "I don't care what a player does but when you start pointing to the dugout and saying all those things he was saying, a guy like me that respects the game, I didn't like that and I let him know it," said Pujols. "He did us a favor. He woke up a sleeping giant. They beat us all year long. You don't have to do something stupid like that. I respect the game. I wanted him to know I didn't appreciate that." Pujols later said the incident won't be forgotten. But the teams don't play again this season. It's sort of like that beanball war they had at the end of last season. It was too late to do anything about it afterward. Let's just say these teams don't like each other very much. And I guarantee you the Cards don't like the fact that the Brewers beat them 10 times in 15 meetings. They aren't used to that. ...

Pittsburgh - I finally got to talk to Carlos Villanueva about the things Albert Pujols said about him after the game Wednesday night in St. Louis. Pujols accused Villanueva of pointing into the Cards dugout after getting out of a bases-loaded jam and said he showed the team no respect. Villanueva said he was not pointing into the St. Louis dugout and meant no disrespect whatsoever, that he merely was excited about getting out of the jam. And he said Pujols had no right to go off on him like that. "I think sometimes he thinks he's bigger than the game," said Villanueva. "He's not. "I have respect for the Cardinals. I'm going to do my best to do my job. I did not point in their dugout or look at anybody. (Catcher Jason) Kendall (who caught a foul pop for the last out) was a little bit toward their dugout and I was looking at him. "I used to have a lot of respect for Pujols. Now, I've lost some of that respect. I don't know why he would say those things about me. They're not true." As for the other "mini controversy" in St. Louis -- the Brewers untucking their shirts after victories, which some Cardinals folks said was showing the other team up -- both manager Ned Yost and centerfielder Mike Cameron, who started the tradition, had the same basic response. "If they don't want to see it, then beat us," said Yost. Cameron had almost the same words, and couldn't believe anyone would make a big deal about it. Anyway, that's the final wor ...

I know some will disagree strongly, but I really believe now is the time for Pujols to meet Tommy John. Certainly it is possible (though unlikely) the Cubs and/or Brewers could suffer an epic collapse to make the division interesting ,and I understand the argument for never giving up on a season. But at some point you have to consider the big picture. Surgery now will mean Pujols is back in the lineup in early '09. If he continues to play without the surgery, he will continue to be a great player... until the day "it blows." ( http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/bird-land/bird-land/2008/03/a-users-guide-to-Pujols-elbow/ ) Do we really want to risk that day being in the middle of an '09 playoff race? I say it's better to strategically determine the proper time to address the matter (now) rather than letting the elbow decide. Shutting Pujols down would probably mean "giving up" on the season. While that's certainly not a good feeling, it would also allow us to be extra cautious with Carpenter, Wainwright and anyone else feeling less than 100%. Just my two cents. ...
