Brea, California ~ A day trip around town in Brea can be like a visit to your favorite gallery. The city's Art program known as "Art in Public Places"  began in 1975 and has continued throughout the years up until today. As development took place in our city each developer contributed to the citizens of Brea  and those who visit, Art work, in large part sculptures around town that we all enjoy daily. One of my favorites I pass daily, just a few blocks from home, it's the popular "Jumping Deer" at the corner Berry and Northwood. The neighborhood location of "Jumping Deer" is at the base of the hills and (I'm told) the sculpture is reminiscent of an occasional nearby deer, although in truth I've never seen a live one here. At holiday time you could see a red nose on the one on the far left, the adopted Rudolph so-to-speak. It was a favorite place for the annual photo for the Christmas card. At this point, that's not encouraged. The sculpture has been repaired several times and MIA once (shipped back to the artist) after mis-guided vehicles failed to negotiate the normally easy left-turn. Not that I'm in any sense of the words an Art critic, I just know what I like. Some pieces are a throw-back to early settlers in the area. Others are...well shall I say a little more impressionistic? The piece on the left is titled "Roughnecks" it's located at the entrance to a commercial and light industrial park. Brea was once known as an oil town ev ...

Sultry women in the shadows. Skeletons peering up from under water. Rats scampering across the landscape. They're the foreboding images emblazoned on Public health posters over the last century. Kojo explores the iconography of Public health in the 20th century. ...
