So I finished up this 5 week Project with a bunch of students/interns at work. It was a pretty involved deal that pretty much took up my whole life the last 5 weeks. I wont go on about all that is involved, as that isn't my point here, but it was pretty fun. These folks are all in their early 20s and seriously into facebook. So I gained a lot of friends on there, and it has been pretty cool. One thing is that lots of people took pictures at various events and then would put them up on facebook. As I looked at them, every so often I would see myself and just be overcome with a realization that I'm fat. I've let things slide and it really shows in a way I didn't notice before this. So (I like that word, can you tell?) I'm getting much more strict with myself about what and how much I eat. I'm also back to exercising regularly. Right now my main work-out will be 45 minutes on my elliptical trainer. I don't think I can run regularly again until I can get enough pounds off that it wont kill my knees. Today, as part of my effort to keep things going, I created a 45 minute Playlist for my time on the trainer. The mission is simple: it allows you to upload mp3 files from your personal music library into a program and create a virtual mix tape of songs that you can send to whoever you want or link to. According to Slate (formerly, Salon's ) tech writer Farhad Manjoo , reviewing the iPhone makeover and cool third-party programs that optomize its potential, the expense and hassle of securing the new device is worthwhile if only for mobile access to Pandora.com . The personally-programmed radio site has captivated me, too -- Pandora's Music Genome Project reliably streams known and unknown music I like -- jazz-beyond-jazz -- on my B **tches Brew "station" in surprising juxtapositions and successions. Virtually free, nearly boundless music exploration at one's fingertips! What Pandora does is allow anyone to plant seeds of favorite artists and songs, then let her take over the tune selection. She presumably employs some 50 professional musicologists analyzing pieces on the basis of 400 musical attributes to arrive at an unfolding Playlist which you can tweak with directions at it unfurls. Delightful hours of listening result. I don't have an iPhone (yet), nor an iPod ; I prefer open air sounds of the city to channeling anything directly into my ear canals. The Nintendo Wii could turn into a budding media center with DragonMedia Player version 0.03 Alpha, if author DragonMinded 's ambitious Project could deliver the goods. Seeing as this native Wii application (yes - no Linux required , folks !) most recent build already incorporates MODPlug tracker as well as standard MPEG audio layer 3 playback, it's already turning out into the standard Winamp 2.xx player we grew familiar with in the 90s. The following formats are supported: it mod mp1 mp2/mpa mp3 s3m wav (8/16/24/32 mono/stereo) xm But the homebrew developer isn't done yet, for DragonMinded's ultimate goals for DragonMedia Player include more playback support for other formats (FLAC support coming, and possibly video as well), and the ability to play media sources over the DVD drive, a USB-connected hard drive, and over the Internet (i.e., Shoutcast, Webcast, Flash video). For now, DragonMedia Player has very limited functions for playback. It will play what supported media files are present inside the present SD card loaded into the front, no matter what its location is inside the card. The sequence of discovery will determine the sequence of the Playlist progression, and there's little ability to re-sort the Playlist. Playlists, random order play, a seek bar, and icons will soon be integrated in future versions of DragonMedia Player, so we'll keep an eye out for further iterations of the Project. About Pandora ( Download Link ) Pandora is a part of the Music Genome Project and allows you to create "stations" of your favorite artists. Pandora then pairs those artists to others you might like and plays an unlimited Playlist based on your favorite artists. Pandora tracks your likes and dislikes and will play songs based on those results. Pandora lets you find new music for free, and who can argue with that? Except for when you're trapped in the car, there's less and less reason to listen to traditional radio -- especially when there's so much cool stuff online. We've already got the free-form taintradio.org, which debuted back in June; and now there's Comboland Radio, which went up on Friday with a Playlist devoted to music of the Carolinas. The bulk of what you'll hear is stuff from way back when: Pressure Boys, Bad Checks, Connells, Nantucket, dB's, PKM, Fetchin' Bones and lots of stuff from the Don Dixon and Mitch Easter orbits, alongside the occasional current act (I've heard both The T's and Bleeding Hearts within the past hour). While it has a name similar to Steve Boyle's "Return to Comboland" video Project, Comboland Radio is a separate undertaking. It's the Project of Mike Smith, known as "Moose" on the air at WTRG/Oldies-100.7 and other Triangle stations during the 1980s and '90s. Smith lives in Kill Devil Hills nowadays and works for Max Media, which owns 37 small-market stations. The impetus to start this came with David Enloe's death last year, which inspired Smith to pull out his old albums. "I'm a fan and a packrat who saved a lot of albums and CDs over the years," Smith says. "So I dug all that out, started listening to it and digitizing it, and I decided it still sounded really good.
