There’s been a good deal of curiosity lately about when we might begin building our Prius Hybrid here in North America. Now we can satisfy that curiosity. As part of a sweeping set of changes that reflect the state of the automobile business in the United States, Prius assembly will begin here in late 2010 at a brand-new plant currently under construction in Blue Springs, Mississippi. Prius thus will join the Camry Hybrid, assembled in Kentucky, as the second Toyota hybrid produced in North America. This important step will allow us to better respond to increased demand for hybrid vehicles. Assembly of the Highlander midsize SUV, originally scheduled for the new Mississippi plant, will shift to our Princeton, Indiana plant. That change becomes effective Fall 2009. With Highlander’s move to the Princeton plant, assembly of the Tundra will be consolidated at our San Antonio, Texas plant, effective Spring 2009. Part of what’s driving these changes is the declining market for fullsize pickups and SUVs. Because of that declining market, Toyota is temporarily suspending Tundra and Sequoia production beginning August 8th. Work is scheduled to resume in November. Production of V8 engines at our Huntsville, Alabama plant also will be suspended. Team members at all three facilities will be provided employment during this period. These changes are intended as a way to minimize – for us, at least - the effects of the economic influenza that has s ...

I was stopped in a line of traffic, waiting for the light to change. I reached over to pick something out of a bag on the passenger floor and got a piercing noise that appeared to be coming from under the glove compartment. It sounded just like a fire detector alarm going off--it was that piercing. I didn't know what to do. After about 30 seconds, the sound gradually wound down and disappeared. It has not happened since. I had the key fob in my jean pocket and wonder if I set off the alarm by bending over to pick up the bag. I have never tried the alarm button on the fob so I don't know what it sounds like. It doesn't work now when I press it. I can't think of anything I had in the car to sound like a home fire detector sound. The bag had a calendar, pocket calendar, and mouse pad. Any ideas? What does the alarm on the key sound like? Is it honking? ...

Filed under: Hybrid , Toyota , Green Daily , USA Click above for more high-res shots of the 2007 Toyota Prius Touring There is more than just the high price for a gallon of gasoline which is weighing heavily on the nation's economy. The housing slump has been hitting hard as well, with many homes sitting unsold for much longer periods and selling for significantly less money than just a few years back. So, considering these two markets are both undergoing similar pains, why not combine the two and offer a fuel-sipper with the purchase of a high-priced home? That is what two Maryland women have decided to do by offering to give away a Toyota Prius with their $595,000 three-bedroom colonial built 1907 and located in Easton, Maryland. The mother and daughter duo had planned to sell the home after making various improvements, as they have done in the past. Now that it is complete, though, it is sitting on the market. "We're losing money on the house, and the Prius only adds to losing money, but we also realize it's time we really got to sell the house," says Catherine Poe, the owner. She says she would be willing to keep the Prius and reduce the house accordingly, but hopes to get more attention with the car. Considering that we've found the story interesting enough to post, we'd imagine her strategy has proved successful. Wanted - 2010 Prius - 6-way adjustable driver's seat, can be mechanical, doesn't have to be power, but more comfortable than the current version. What is 6-way seat? * slides back and forth * seatback reclines * seat bottom raises and lowers ----------------------------------- At least Toyota could put a sitting height range into the current specs given the seat height cannot be lowered. Sure, could raise the seat with a cushion, but can't lower obviously unless altering the seat to some other fixed position. Good Lord this is so stupid. *Did you folks know the current Prius in Japan, Europe and Australia has the mechanical handle to raise/lower driver's seat? * My 1988 Toyota pickup has a seat bottom tilt adjuster, same with my sister's 1993 Camry. The current Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Rav4, Camry, etc .... Honda Civic Hybrid, have this simple device. Apparently some idiot in US Toyota design / marketing decided the US is not good enough to get this feature on their Prius. Why? Could cost be an issue? Would you pay $25, $50 more for a fully adjustable seat in your Prius? It is entirely possible they will make the same mistake on the 2010 Prius, and the choice will be a 4-way only adjustable seat on all models for the next 6 years or so. Does anyone here have pull, clout with Toyota corporate US / Japan wherever to verify the 2010 model will indeed get the 6-way adjustable driver's seat? I really shouldn't have to say any of this. This ...

Toyota’s next generation Prius, due out as early as next spring, will be outfitted with solar panels to help run the on-board electronics, according to a report from the Nikkei newspaper . Smaller start-up car companies, such as Th!nk , have plans for solar power augmented cars on the books too , but the incorporation of solar panels on the Prius would mark the first time a major car manufacturer has done such a thing with one of its models. Currently in its second generation, the third generation Prius has been widely anticipated for some time now. Due for a complete overhaul, the addition of solar panels to the Prius would corroborate the expectation of major changes in both style and function in the next generation model. According to Marketwatch , the Nikkei reported that the solar panels would provide a portion of the two to five kilowatts needed to power the air conditioning unit. The solar panels would be supplied by Kyocera . Toyota plans to pump up production of the Prius next year to 450,000 units. This would represent a 60% increase in production over 2007 numbers, Marketwatch also reported. Although that sounds promising, Toyota has kind of dropped the ball this year by failing to meet demand for the popular hybrid and causing a worldwide Prius shortage. Blaming a lack of battery production capacity , Toyota has promised to open another battery facility soon. Let’s hope they can actually meet demand for the Prius next year, ...
