Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his wife and her friend in Los Angeles, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room. The 61-year-old former football star was convicted of all 12 counts late Friday after jurors deliberated for more than 13 hours. He released a heavy sigh as the charges were read and was immediately taken into custody. Simpson, who went from American sports idol to celebrity-in-exile after his murder acquittal, could spend the rest of his life in Prison. His attorney said he would appeal. Many people considered the four-week trial justice delayed. Simpson was cleared in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in one of the most sensational trials of the 20th century, but was later found liable for the Deaths in a civil case. "I don't like to use the word payback," defense attorney Yale Galanter said. "I can tell you from the beginning my biggest concern ... was whether or not the jury would be able to separate their very strong feelings about Mr. Simpson and judge him fairly and honestly." The Hall of Fame football star was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges for gathering up five men a year ago and storming into a room at a hotel-casino, where the group seized several game balls, plaques and photos. Prosecutors said two of the men with him were armed; one ...

A former police officer sentenced to life in Prison for killing his pregnant lover is seeking a new trial, arguing that the jury handed down contradictory verdicts. Attorneys for Bobby Cutts Jr. filed the appeal Friday in the 5th District Court of Appeals. Cutts, 31, was convicted in February of killing Jessie Davis and their unborn daughter at her northeast Ohio home. Prosecutors alleged he killed Davis, 26, and the fetus last summer to avoid making child support payments. Thousands of volunteers helped search for Davis before her body was found dumped in a park. Jurors convicted Cutts of aggravated murder in the death of the fetus. They found him not guilty of aggravated murder in Davis' death but convicted him of a lesser charge of murder. The filing argues that convicting Cutts of murder in Davis' death and aggravated murder in the fetus' death was inconsistent because both Deaths were the result of the same act. "The jury clearly lost its way and created such a manifest miscarriage of justice that the conviction must be reversed and a new trial ordered," the appeal said. Cutts' attorneys also argue that the judge presiding over the trial should have allowed jurors to consider an involuntary manslaughter conviction because no witnesses contradicted Cutts' claim that he did not purposely kill Davis. Cutts testified that he accidentally hit Davis in the throat with his elbow during an argument and that he dumped her body in a pa ...

An illegal immigrant serving five life terms for the strangling Deaths of his wife, three young daughters and a neighborhood girl apparently took his own life Thursday by hanging himself, authorities said. Simon Rios, 36, was found in his cell at the Pendleton Correctional Facility northeast of Indianapolis after noon Thursday, Prison spokesman David Barr said. Rios was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later after guards and medical personnel couldn't revive him. There were no signs of foul play, Barr said. An autopsy was scheduled. Rios' attorney, Michelle Kraus, said he left a note requesting that his remains be returned to his native Mexico. "I'm very sad. I know he did a very evil thing, and he always knew he did a very evil thing. He always expressed remorse to me," Kraus said. The prosecutor in Rios' case said any remorse the man may have felt had little weight, given the heinous nature of his crimes. "I don't want anybody to ever lose sight that he is not a victim here," Allen County prosecutor Karen Richards said Thursday. "He killed his wife and four little girls. They are the victims here." On Dec. 8, 2005, Rios lured 10-year-old Alejandra Gutierrez, a former classmate of his eldest daughter, into his van as she waited at a school bus stop in Fort Wayne. Authorities say he raped and strangled her, then dumped her body in a gravel pit 50 miles away near Muncie. Five days after killing Alejandra but before her body was fo ...

New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. "I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I'm not worried this will affect my career because I haven't done anything," he said in the jailhouse interview. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in Prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday. Prosecutor Raul Quiroz said an investigation could lead to additional charges in the Deaths of Angely Fana, 29, and Josefina Minaya, 38. Fana's mother, Eudosia Ruane, has accused Burgos of intentionally running her daughter over because she refused to go out with him. ...

An Alabama Prison van and a truck collided on a rural highway early Friday, killing as many as seven people, Prison officials said. Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said the accident occurred on an isolated stretch of U.S. 82 in Montgomery County. Corbett said as many as seven Deaths were reported, but the names of the victims were not immediately released. The van was about 20 miles from the state Prison in Bullock County, but Corbett said it was unclear whether it was carrying prisoners. Officials said they had difficulty confirming details about the crash because of the remote location. "We have people still getting down there," Corbett said. The Montgomery County coroner's office said forensics workers were on the scene. The Prison system often uses vans to transport prisoners to court appearances. The accident occurred about 20 miles southeast of Montgomery. ...

A woman who spent nearly three years in Prison for her role in the nation's deadliest human smuggling attempt will return to Prison for up to an additional four years, a judge ruled. Prosecutors won an appeal to return Norma Gonzalez Sanchez, 48, to Prison, arguing that her original 33-month sentence was "unreasonable" because it meant she would spend less than three years in Prison, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office. Gonzalez Sanchez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport and harbor undocumented immigrants illegally under circumstances that placed the lives of people in jeopardy and caused serious bodily injury and death, according to U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle's office. The May 2003 smuggling attempt resulted in the Deaths of 19 illegal immigrants, who were packed into the back of a tractor trailer. The trailer was found at a truck stop near Victoria, about 100 miles southwest of Houston. U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes re-sentenced Gonzalez Sanchez to 84 months on Monday, but she will receive credit for time served. The judge ordered Gonzalez Sanchez to voluntarily surrender to the U.S. Marshals Service on Oct. 20. ...

Even though he wasn't in the courtroom, it was easy to picture 2-year-old Lukasz Andrews with a phone in his hand, calling out "Mommy" as a 911 dispatcher listened helplessly and his parents lay brutally slain upstairs. On the first day of the trial for Fred Dewitt Cooper Jr., who is charged in the killing of Andrews' parents, prosecutors played the 911 recording that captivated many after the slayings three years ago. Cooper, 30, has pleaded not guilty to armed burglary and two-counts of first-degree murder in the Deaths of Steven and Michelle Andrews. She had been beaten and strangled. Her husband was shot in the head. If convicted, Cooper could face life in Prison or death. The 911 call on Dec. 27, 2005, is largely silent. The dispatcher repeatedly asks for information but hears nothing. Then comes sheriff's Deputy Tracie Lodato, knocking on the couple's front door. "Mommy, mommy," the little boy calls out. It's unclear who made the call. On Friday, Assistant State Attorney Anthony Kunasek noted that a neighbor reporting seeing a man matching Cooper's description enter and leave the community around the time the call was placed. When Lodato entered the home, she told the dispatcher it appeared empty. "I'm sure the parents are upstairs sleeping," she said. Lodato testified that the child pointed upstairs, and when they reached the top of the staircase, she saw one of the mother's feet through a doorway and told the boy to hurry ...

Robert LaPointe could face a bill of as much as $800,000 to compensate the families of two Maine residents killed last August in a boating accident as part of a civil case filed after the accident. LaPointe, a Medway resident, was found guilty Wednesday of two counts of aggravated drunken driving in connection with the Deaths of Terry Raye Trott and Suzanne Groetzinger. On the more serious charges of manslaughter and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, the Maine jury was deadlocked, forcing a mistrial. Prosecutors in Maine have said they will decide whether to refile the manslaughter charges after LaPointe is sentenced. He is expected to be sentenced in November to between one and three years in Prison. The guilty verdict, however, clears the way for a lawsuit filed against LaPointe by the Trott and Groetzinger families. "The claim in the civil case is that Mr. LaPointe was negligent, and that his negligence caused the Deaths of two people," said Benjamin Gideon, an attorney for the Groetzinger family. "The criminal verdict will resolve, as a matter of law, the issue of liability in the civil case. "He will not be able to argue in the civil case he was not negligent. That was foreclosed by the finding beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty of aggravated operating under the influence. As a matter of law, that would be negligent," Gideon said. A lawyer for LaPointe did not return a call last Thursday seeking comment on t ...
