Violent crime and overall crime went down last year in Prince George, according to Statistics Canada.Overall crime was down by seven per cent and violent crime was down 13.4 per cent, stats show.The numbers are greater than most crime indicators for 2005, but down from 2006 levels that were higher in most categories.Violence in Prince George dropped 4.5 per cent inside the city, and 7.5 in the rural areas compared to 2006. Property crime was down 4.6 per cent in the city and down 12 per cent in rural areas. "I know 2006 was kind of a spike year," said Prince George RCMP Insp. Kirke Hopkins. "We started the crime reduction team focused on specific crimes in April 2007 and I think that helped, but the trend was downward across the whole board, not just those crimes." Hopkins said early indications are almost all categories of crime have gone down this year as well.The crime reduction team is a group of local plainclothes officers who spend their time aiming at prolific offenders in the areas... ...
