The Freeport boys golf team has had better scores than the one it posted Saturday. But on the tough Deer Valley golf course in Rock Falls where 20 teams participated, a 307 wasn’t bad at all. In fact, it was enough for a first-place finish after a five-man tiebreaker with Moline. It was the first time in Freeport coach Matt Gallie’s four-year tenure that the Pretzels have finished first in a tournament. Aaron Burke, who shot the fifth lowest score of the tournament, finished with a 75. Bryan Blocklinger had a 76 and was 10th individually. Dan Meier and Shane Kunz each shot a 78 and Tyler Fago’s 80 was the tiebreaker for the Pretzels. For Kelsey Hoefer, her senior year at Freeport just became a little easier. The captain of the Pretzel volleyball team gave her verbal commitment to Towson University, just outside Baltimore, Md. Hoefer will sign her written commitment in November. “I feel like a huge load has been lifted off my chest,’’ she said. “It’s my senior year, and I see all my friends filling out their college applications. I’m just glad I don’t have to go through all that.’’ For Hoefer, it was an unusual road that led her to Towson. “Their coach had actually never seen me play,’’ she said. “I played in a tournament with my club team, the Marengo Fusion, and their assistant coach saw me. I went for a visit to a camp there and every thing just felt right. When something clicks, you know it.’’ Her current coach believes that in Hoefer, Towson is getting more than just a solid volleyball player. “She’s a great leader on and off the court,’’ Freeport coach Rodney Pritchett said. “She’s always been a good hitter, but she’s worked hard to improve her defense and serving game and she has.’’ It isn’t just leadership and skill that’s led Hoefer to Towson, either. “Whether it’s the last shot in basketball, or last set in volleyball, I want the chance to win the game,’’ she said. “I’m real competitive, and I guess that’s why that is.’’ But before she can concentrate on Towson, Hoefer, who is undecided on a major but leaning towards business, knows there’s still work ...

Rodney Pritchett doesn’t want the conference’s best volleyball players. He wants the best athletes. Starting with senior Courtney Shiffer, that’s exactly what the Freeport coach has. “She’s probably the best athlete in the conference this year,” Pritchett said after Shiffer led the team to a 25-23, 25-13 home win against Guilford on Thursday. “She did an outstanding job of hitting the ball over the blockers and finding the spots on the court.” Shiffer had 14 kills, 11 of which came in Game 1. When the 5-11 senior was in the middle, she smacked kills off a quick set almost every time her setters gave her one. “I think they were commited to blocking on Kelsey (Hoefer) on our outside, so we ran the middle,” Shiffer said. “And we had to run the quick-tempo hits so the blockers didn’t have time to shift over.” Freeport (10-1, 6-0 NIC-10) remained unbeaten in the conference and is tied for first place with Boylan (6-0). The Pretzels’ next conference match is Tuesday at defending conference champion Hononegah (5-1). Guilford kept pace with the Pretzels all through the first game. The Vikings had the lead at 16-15, but when Shiffer returned to the front row she pounded four of her kills to give Freeport back the lead. A kill by Laura Witt from the right side ended the game. “We didn’t play well enough to win, because we were just playing safe ball to stay with them,” Guilford coach Tina Sundstedt said. “We had a good run in the first gam ...

The Freeport boys golf team showed its depth yet again Wednesday afternoon. Aaron Burke and Dan Meier both said they had shot a bit higher in the last few meets this season then they would have liked. But Wednesday, Burke and Meier shot the lowest rounds for the Pretzels as the team defeated Belvidere in a dual-meet, 152-193. The Pretzels (8-1, 8-0 NIC-10) placed third in the Freeport Invite last Saturday — a finish that the team was disappointed with, rather satisfied. “We thought playing them our home course that we were the best team out here,” Meier said. “I didn’t play well and Aaron didn’t play his best round and we felt like we let the team down a little bit. “So we went out here trying to do better and pick up some momentum.” Wednesday’s meet scores could have been an indication that the momentum has picked up. Meier finished as the co-runner up for the meet, with a 37 score. Burke, the meet’s medalist with a score of 36, chipped in a birdie on the first hole after his first three strokes were less than stellar. He said he got into rhythm as he progressed through the course — something he wasn’t doing as well up until yesterday. “Individually, I finished a lot stronger,” he said. “I was struggling with my ball-striking and putts, but today I finished strong.” Lately, it had been Tyler Fago who finished meets strong for Freeport. He finished with a 39, however, and struggled during his last few holes. “Things just fell apa ...
