During Thursday’s Drug sweep, which led to the arrest of 10 Drug offenders, Police Chief Louis J. Pacheco overheard a person associated with the arrests describe the Prescription Drug use as an “epidemic,” adding “everyone our age does pills, they are at every party.” As part of his job, School Resource Officer Louis F. Pacheco talks with teenagers and young adults about the local Drug scene. “I know it’s commonplace,” Pacheco said, referring to Prescription painkillers like Perkoset and Oxycontin. The drugs are as popular as beer with high school juniors and seniors and adults in their 20s, he said. The highly addictive drugs, classified as opiates or opioids, aren’t just swallowed but all too frequently crushed and snorted to achieve the quickest and most potent high. The pills cost about $60 apiece and are often five times the strength of a typical dosage prescribed by a physician. The high price is attracting big-time Drug dealers, those with long records and guns, like several of the suspects arrested Thursday in a joint Drug bust with Taunton police. “That whole crew are all real live Drug dealers making hundreds of thousands of dollars ruining people’s lives,” Pacheco said. Attempts to control unlawful Internet sales of legitimate, though controlled, medications have been a bit successful but illicit sales remain a major problem. Last year, 581 sites offered to sell opoids, stimulants and depressants without a suitable Prescription, but a new study says the number is now 365--still excessively high. The reduction is likely because of federal and state efforts to mollify the situation amidst concerns about the easy online availability of the addictive and risky medications in the absence of a Prescription. The study by the Drug Enforcement Administration found that while only 11 percent of brick and mortar pharmacy sales are for controlled drugs, a whopping 85 percent of Internet prescriptions are for the same. Authorities continue to struggle to find ways to stop the Internet providers, which are often transient companies with slick avoidance techniques. Some sites even sell fake triplicate prescriptions for use at a regular pharmacy. - read the New York Times article - see the CASA press release - get more from MarketWatch Related Article: Counterfeit drugs plaguing Big Pharma ...
