In July, McFly gave away their album Radio:ACTIVE with a Sunday newspaper, and today they've put the CD out on general release, adding three extra tracks (including latest single "Lies" ) and a two part documentary about the making of the album and the promotion that followed it. If you're a McFly fan (and I love those boys) you know what to expect — big choruses, catchy riffs, and strong hooks that create alternately fun and angsty Power Pop melodies. On this disc — their fourth album, but the first on their own record label Super Records — they've amped up the guitars and energy on all the self-penned tracks. The stand-out songs are "Lies", "Smile", "Corrupted" and "The Last Song", but I enjoyed the album as a whole, though it could be said that a couple of the tracks feel a little too similar. To read more of my thoughts on the album and DVD, find out which member of the band was hypnotised in Australia as well as who the most competitive McFly man is, just read more ...

This morning 60 of Britain's largest Pop stars announced they are forming the Featured Artists' Coalition , a group that will seek out greater control of the artists' music in the digital age. Robbie Williams, Radiohead, the Verve and Kaiser Chiefs are just some of the members included in the Featured Artists' Coalition. In a claim that many artists have been making for years, the group says it wants the artists to actually retain control over their music instead of the record labels having those rights. The group claims that artists are usually left out of the cut when their songs are distributed digitally, whether it be online or through mobile services. "It is time for artists to have a strong collective voice to stand up for their interests," said Brian Message, co-manager of Radiohead and the singer Kate Nash. "The digital landscape is changing fast and new deals are being struck all the time, but all too often without reference to the people who actually make the music." Jazz Summers, manager of The Verve, added that the group would "seek to improve the treatment of artists within the business and campaign to update laws and practices that better reflect the new music landscape." "Digital technology gives artists the opportunity to control their future — this is the time to seize that opportunity." Permalink | Comments ...

The Ugly Beats - more photos photo by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer Paul Collin's Beat - more photos photo by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival http://www.myspace.com/wildweekendaustin Friday, August 29th, 2008 Saturday, August 30th, 2008 The Mohawk (Austin, Texas) Beerland (Austin, Texas) It was a small but dedicated crowd that packed the plaza that is the outdoor stage of the Mohawk to see the first Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival. Starting out with day shows over at Beerland and moving to the Mohawk for the headliners, old and new punk-poppers gathered to see new bands like Austin's Ugly Beats , old bands like Paul Collin's Beat , and bands doing reunion gigs like The Pointed Sticks and 20/20. I was able to fade the heat for one night and join in the fun, stopping by to catch the Friday night gigs at The Mohawk making it in time to catch The Ugly Beats from beginning to end. A great Austin band, the go-go boots, twangy Beatle-esque sound, and fading summer light gave the venue the aura of a late 60's beach party. It was dark by the time Nikki Corvette and her band hit the stage, continuing the go-go boots and 60's theme. I stole upstairs to the patio to try to find Paul Collins and I ended up finding him nursing a beer and a nasty case of laryngitis. Nodding to my questions I tried to toss him yes and no softballs, but it was frustrating for both of us so in the end I wished him a good set, an ...

CASE CLOSED?: Let’s get this out of the way: I don’t know if Neko Case is coming, and neither did Carl Newman , the de facto leader of The New Pornographers when we spoke Sept. 10. “I don’t want to say she is and (then) she doesn’t,” Newman said. Even without Case, New P’s melodic Pop retains its magnetism live. The Canadian Power Pop band will play at Headliners at 8 p.m. Monday as part of the free Jack Daniel’s Studio No. 7 show. Performing a brand-sponsored show is nothing new for indie bands. It’s a way to make money from art, kind of like licensing songs, something New P has done before. ...

We're living in a time where four of the biggest female Pop stars each have hot new singles blowing up radio, iPods and Internet sites. It's truly a mighty moment, given how the music industry is so fractured and appears willing to throw a record deal at some person who has more than 1 million views on his or her random YouTube video. Pet Rock embraces this moment in modern music history and asks you to vote on the hottest of the four songs in what we call The Power Pop Star Femme Fatale Four-Way. And the nominees are: - Christina Aguilera for "Keeps Getting Better" - Beyonce for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" - Madonna for "Give it 2 Me" - Britney Spears for "Womanizer" Below is your voter's guide and a link to your ballot. Remember, we're talking about the actual song, not the video. Please consider that when you enter the voting booth. Christina Aguilera: "Keeps Getting Better" Beyonce: "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" Madonna: "Give it 2 Me" Britney Spears: "Womanizer" VOTE: Power Pop STAR FEMME FATALE FOUR-WAY ...

The word giddy pops up in the press clips of Delaware's the Spinto Band as a way to describe its brand of sometimes frenetic, always off-kilter and intermittently guitar-based brand of Pop. Check! On Moonwink (Park the Van Records), the six-man group creates ditties that never feel frothy. Think '80s Power Pop meets '90s alt-rock with dashes of jumpy melodies thrown in. Judging by the single "Summer Grof" these guys sound like they've inhaled too much candy. And yet, that hook immediately sticks in your head. The rest of Moonwink , especially the head-bobbing "Pumpkins & Paisley" and the rock-edged "Vivian, Don't," gets under your skin with repeated listens. This is one of those happy, let's-all-bop CDs that won't leave you feeling guilty for liking it. And at less than 35 minutes, the proceedings have run their course before you start to feel lightheaded. Photo: Moonwink CD cover courtesy of cduniverse.com. ...
