by Tim Jones The percentage of working poor in large metropolitan areas soared by 40 percent during the first half of the decade, reversing gains from the 1990s in the fight against Poverty, according to a report released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution. THE OVERVIEW The study covered 1999 through 2005 and examined 58 metro areas, finding that 34 reported increased rates of "concentrated working Poverty," a measurement of low-income workers and families living in high-Poverty... ...

Context  Little is known about the efficacy of mental health interventions for children exposed to armed conflicts in low- and middle-income settings. Childhood mental health problems are difficult to address in situations of ongoing Poverty and political instability. Objective  To assess the efficacy of a school-based intervention designed for conflict-exposed children, implemented in a low-income setting. Design, Setting, and Participants  A cluster randomized trial involving 495 children (81.4% inclusion Rate) who were a mean (SD) age of 9.9 (1.3) years, were attending randomly selected schools in political violence–affected communities in Poso, Indonesia, and were screened for exposure (≥1 events), posttraumatic stress disorder, and anxiety symptoms compared with a wait-listed control group. Nonblinded assessment took place before, 1 week after, and 6 months after treatment between March and December 2006. Intervention  Fifteen sessions, over 5 weeks, of a manualized, school-based group intervention, including trauma-processing activities, cooperative play, and creative-expressive elements, implemented by locally trained paraprofessionals. Main Outcome Measures  We assessed psychiatric symptoms using the Child Posttraumatic Stress Scale, Depression Self-Rating Scale, the Self-Report for Anxiety Related Disorders 5-item version, and the Children's Hope Scale, and assessed function impairment as treatment outcomes using standardized ...

Latinos, Blacks squeezed hard in tight job market. As the nation’s job market grows tighter, Latinos and Black workers are suffering disproportionately, according to employment specialists and figures from the Department of Labor. While employment shrank by 51,000 jobs in July and nationwide joblessness rose to a four-year high of 5.7 percent, Latino unemployment was 7.4 percent last month, according to the Labor Department. Black joblessness was 9.7 percent in July. It was 9.2 percent in June. The overall teen jobless Rate was 20.3 percent in July. It was 27.3 percent for Latino teens and 32 percent for Black teens. Analysts attribute much of the Latino job loss to ongoing contraction in the construction industry. A Labor Department report said the construction industry “has shed 557,000 jobs since its September 2006 employment peak, with nearly three-quarters of the decline occurring since October 2007.” A Pew report and other studies have found that for Black workers and their families, the picture is especially bleak. An Aug. 1 report by the Joint Economic Committee of Congress said that one in four Blacks lived in Poverty in 2006. Black lost 55,000 jobs since December and wage growth continued its stall. “During the 2000s’ economic recovery, African American workers’ inflation-adjusted wages grew at an annual Rate of only 0.2 percent, after having grown four times as much (0.8 percent) per year during the 1990s recovery,” the ...

Prepare to get depressed. The is retired General Barry McCaffreys' "sit rep" on the state of Afghanistan today. I can link the full .pdf if anyone's interested, but I'm posting his "bottom line" here because that's the meat of the piece. (after c&p, I had to reformat some of it, so if breaks come in out place, mea culpa) ---Quote--- 4. THE BOTTOM LINE: SIX ASSERTIONS. 1. Afghanistan is in misery. 68% of the population has never known peace. Life expectancy is 44 years. It has the second highest maternal mortality Rate in the world: One of six pregnant Afghan women dies for each live birth. Terrorist incidents and main force insurgent violence is rising (34% increase this year in kinetic events.) Battle action and casualties are now much higher in Afghanistan for US forces than they are in Iraq. The Afghan government at provincial and district level is largely dysfunctional and corrupt. The security situation (2.8 million refugees); the economy (unemployment 40% and rising, extreme Poverty 41%, acute food shortages, inflation 12% and rising, agriculture broken); the giant heroin/opium criminal enterprise ($4 billion and 800 metric tons of heroin); and Afghan governance are all likely to get worse in the coming 24 months. 2. The magnificent, resilient Afghan people absolutely reject the ideology and violence of the Taliban (90% or greater) but have little faith in the ability of the government to provide security, justice, clean water, ...

In today's economy, families are struggling to make ends meet more than at any time in the last three decades. The cost of gas, food, housing and medical care has risen far apace of wages. Not surprisingly, Poverty in Idaho is growing. More tellingly, the misery index (Rate of inflation and unemployment Rate combined) is higher than it has been since the economic crisis of the late 1970s. It should come as no surprise that low-income to middle-income families are the ones who bear the strain of a downturning economy. ...

When Social Security was enacted in 1935, the average 65-year-old could expect to live another 12 years. In 2005, that life expectancy had increased by 7 years. Starting in 1975, the U.S. started a cost-of-living-adjusting to account for price inflation. What would happen if Congress enacted a cost-of-not-dying-adjustment to account for age inflation? The following chart from a new NBER working paper by John Shoven of Stanford and Gopi Shah Goda of Harvard shows that had the government started adjusting the eligibility age in 1940, the percentage of the population who would receive social security would be cut by half by 2050. If adjustments were made starting in 2004, then the people eligible would drop to 17 percent. (The same idea applied to Medicare produces similar results.) Should the U.S. do this? Are we capable of holding off retirement, both in terms of health and finances, than we were before? Although the Poverty Rate for the 65-and-above population has dropped from 30 percent in the mid-60's to 10 percent today, obesity rates, have risen sharply. Recent data from the C.D.C. show that in 2000, a 70-year-old male had a life expectancy of 13.1 years and an "active life expectancy," which roughly translated is number of years of good health, of 8.2 years. If the number of inactive life years has remained roughly the same since 1935, then that would mean that it should be easier to digest a jacking up of the age that would ...
