They were swept out of the NLDS in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it wasn’t even close. Los Angeles won by a combined score of 20-6. They both pulled out Game 3 ALDS victories; Los Angeles went to 12 innings before beating the Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park, cashing in as +136 underdogs. Game 4 of that series will be a repeat of the John Lackey-Jon Lester matchup from Game 1, in which Lester prevailed. I like Lester to do it ... ...

This afternoon, we've got Game 2 of the NLCS, featuring Chad Billingsley and Brett Myers.  I would like to see Myers shut down the Dodgers, if only so the Brewers look a little less pathetic in retrospect.  That game starts at 3:35 CT. Tonight, the ALCS opens with a matchup between Dice-K and James Shields.  Game time is 7:37 CT. Go Rays! ...

As the the weather cools and the courts harden, boys tennis action is heating up. While rain has dampened many past seasons, forcing games to be cancelled, mother nature has cooperated this season — for the most part — and as a result, nearly every regular season match is in the books. Area players such as Justin Hike and Cory Smith, of Olympic, and Arnel Hipolito and Ben Miller, of Central Kitsap, are sure to have a say in who reaches the pinnacle of their respective 3A and 4A Postseason tournaments. Tennis playoffs begin Oct. 17 with 2A and 3A league tournaments hitting off for Klahowya and Olympic, respectively, while Central Kitsap begins the Narrows League Tournament Oct. 23 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Here’s a look at how CK and Oly fared during the regular season and what might await as the playoffs near. ...

It's freaking Brett Myers Mania. Phillies  8,  Dodgers  5 (Philadelphia leads series, 2-0) As  Good Ol' JR  might say, Brett Myers batting or running is bowling shoe ugly. (Hey, it's Red River Rivalry day. And for kicks --  Texas ,  Oklahoma .) Yeah, Myers went 4-for-58 with 3 RBI in the entire regular season, and he's 4-for-5 with 3 RBI this Postseason, including 3-for-3 with all those RBI yesterday. The most amazing thing, though, is he almost fell over between second and third base at one point, and later conked himself in the back of the head on his backswing. Pretty hilarious, really. What can you do? The dude's in the zone. At the plate, anyway. His pitching was not as impressive, as he went five innings with five earned on six hits, four walks and six strikeouts. The Phillies win either way, and Myers' 3 RBI wind up being the difference. Manny Ramirez went deep again, and a long fly to center from Casey Blake threatened to rally the Dodgers back into a tie game late, but Shane Victorino went back to the wall and grabbed it out of the sky with a mildly leaping catch. With the Dodgers burning through six pitchers in the game, their rotation is now set only so far as Hiroki Kuroda will start game three on Sunday. This is a good photo: Red Sox  2,  Rays  0 (Boston leads series, 1-0) Earlier on SportsCenter, Buster Olney said that Daisuke Matsuzaka was the biggest question mark for Boston in this Postseason. ...really? All teams want to go to the Postseason, but not every team has the talent, mindset, and hunger to get there. “There’s a feeling all year that exists – if you want it badly, you can get in,” Plymouth South Head girls soccer Coach Jeanne Adelmann said. “That attitude has to become contagious.” As of Friday morning, seven local teams – four from Plymouth North and three from Plymouth South – remained in contention for a Postseason berth. Only one team – the North girls varsity soccer team – had qualified for the tournament. Some teams have to fight right up through the final game of the season to get into the tournament. Others are expected to make it. The Plymouth North High School boys varsity soccer team has qualified for the Postseason every year since 1979, 19 years under the direction of Emerson Coleman and nine years with Bill Farrell at the helm. The girls had a similar run, but it was disrupted two years ago when the Lady Eagles failed to reach the Postseason. “This year’s seniors were sophomores when we didn’t make it,” Plymouth North Head girls soccer Coach Eric Foley said. “You don’t want to be that (senior) class that didn’t go, the class that didn’t do it.” Some teams have a little bit of breathing room this season. The Plymouth South volleyball team, which hasn’t reached the Postseason tournament since 2001, needs to win three of its final six games to get in. Of the six teams the Panthers will face, they beat two of ...

Rays  9,  Red Sox  8 (11 innings) (Series tied, 1-1) Do you realize that this is the first series this Postseason that has been tied?  Do you realize that someday we all will die ? I caught the start of this game, and after the boxing on Showtime and the finish of Oklahoma State-Mizzou, caught the last few innings. Quite a game, as far as I could tell. Pedroia went deep twice, Youkilis and Bay both homered, and the Red Sox still lose. Oh Mike Timlin! I missed the Pedroia HR, followed two batters later by Youkilis' and then Bay's right after that, which kinda stinks. Home runs are cool. The Rays hit a few themselves (Longoria, Upton, Cliff "Pink" Floyd). They have a travel day now and head to Boston. Woo hoo! ...

By putting their future in the hands of youth last season, the Coyotes were rewarded with a 16-point jump in the standings.
