Jorge Posada, who is the featured guest on YES's "Centerstage" to air Sept. 28, said at the taping today that he believes Joba Chamberlain should stay in the bullpen. When asked his first thoughts when a person's name was mentioned, and Chamberlain was mentioned, Posada said: "Leave him in the bullpen." Posada said: "I think if you start him and he pitches 200 inning in one year, you're going to lose. He's going to get hurt I don't see him as a starter." Posada said the Yankees' biggest need is starting pitching. He also said he fully expects to be in the Opening Day lineup at catcher, despite having had right shoulder surgery last month. ...

Jorge Posada wants Joba Chamberlain kept in the bullpen and predicts more injuries for the young pitcher if the New York Yankees put him in their starting rotation. "I think if you start him and he pitches 200 innings in one year, you're going to lose him. He's going to get hurt. I don't see him as a starter," Posada said Monday during a session of "CenterStage," scheduled to air on the team's YES Network starting Sept. 28. Chamberlain pitched for the University of Nebraska before being drafted by the Yankees in 2006. He was sidelined from Aug. 4 to Sept. 2 because of rotator cuff tendinitis and went back to the bullpen when he returned. ...

Jorge Posada, in a taping for YES Network's Centerstage yesterday, said he believes Joba Chamberlain should remain in the bullpen because he believes the righthander will break down if asked to throw 200 innings. He called the rotator cuff tendinitis that sidelined a "sign." I'm wondering, where does everyone stand right now on Chamberlain's role? Is the consensus that he belongs in the rotation? Or does anyone believe that he is best suited for the bullpen? * To steal a page from Neil Best's beat, I had SNY's sports wrap-up show on my television last night as background noise. When they got to the Chamberlain story, they referred to the comments Posada made as coming from "another network." Guess they didn't want to mention YES. Funny. ...

Filed under: Yankees , AL East , MLB Rumors The Great Joba Debate rages on! Today, Jorge Posada tossed his two cents into the pile offering advice for how Joba Chamberlain should be used. From Ed Price of the Star-Ledger : At a taping of the YES show "CenterStage" Monday, Jorge Posada said Joba Chamberlain should be a reliever. "Leave him in the bullpen," Posada said. "You start him and he pitches 200 innings, he won't be able to. "You're going to lose him. He's going to get hurt. I don't see him as a starter." In case you forgot, Posada isn't the only Yankee who feels this way; Johnny Damon said the same thing back in June, though instead of questioning Joba's durability he praised his ability to shorten the game. So far the suggestions are falling on deaf ears: the management, from Joe Girardi to Brian Cashman all the way up the Hank Steinbrenner , remains committed to developing Joba into an ace starter. Of course, at the going rate it may take several years before Joba actually opens the season in the rotation and stays there all year. He's expected to open 2009 in the bullpen after failing to come close to his innings limit this year, so even in a best-case scenario we'll be hearing this debate until at least 2010 (and perhaps even longer considering Mariano Rivera will be a free agent the following winter).   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...
