Snyder, Cerrato Ask Portis to Take More Serious Approach to Offseason

Chris Turner and Jordan Steffy, two quarterbacks who combined to start every Maryland game last season, were expected to compete for the starting position in summer camp. The surprise is that they have been joined by a third candidate, Josh Portis, who remains in contention less than three weeks ... ...

Clinton Portis is scheduled to make his preseason debut Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills at FedEx Field, Jason Reid and Jason La Canfora report. "Oh, yeah, Clinton is going to get out there a little," offensive coordinator Sherman Smith said yesterday after the Redskins' afternoon practice at Redskins Park. "He's just going to go out and play a series or two, he may not even play 10 plays. We're going to put the ball in his hands to just see the quickness. He's in great shape, he's ready, so just run behind this line and get some time." Portis, who sat out the Redskins' preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts last week, said he plans to keep it simple against the Bills. "I'm not looking to see nothing. I'm looking to see how long they're [going to] leave me out there, to be honest," Portis said. "Is this [going ...

(Courtesy John Park Williams.) Some blogs have made their mark with pictures of famous professional athlete doing borderline inappropriate things with comely young ladies in social settings. This blog is in the process of trying to make its mark with pictures of famous professional athletes awkwardly posed with excited young men at large retail outlets. Yes, that's right, just two days after beginning the morning with Gilbert Arenas and Fan at P.F. Chang's, it's now time to debut a month-old photo of Clinton Portis and Fan at Tysons Corner. The fan in this case, 22-year old John Park Williams of Vienna, was actually inspired by the Gilbert tale to share his own brush with D.C. sports blogging greatness. John writes: I am at the Verizon Wireless store in Tysons Corner, and I see Clinton Portis asking an employee questions. In a store with about 25 people in it, I ...

The Redskins ranked 12th in rushing yards a game (116.9) but 22nd in yards a carry (3.8). Clinton Portis led the NFL with 325 carries, was fourth with 11 touchdowns and was sixth with 1,262 yards. The Washington Times reports that new coach Jim Zorn will use Portis a lot this season. Expect Zorn to have Portis carry the offense, especially during an opening month that includes all three NFC East road games. An effective Portis would allow quarterback Jason Campbell to become accustomed to the new passing game. In Seattle, Mike Holmgren used Shaun Alexander an average of 331 times from 2001 to 2005. Zorn already has said Portis won't have the freedom to take himself out of games, which means he will have to be a workhorse and the offense will run based on how he performs. He will be 27 by opening night but already has 1,710 career carries. This is the kind of news we want to hear. Hopefully, Portis will stay healthy and not have any injuries from the increased work load. It appears he is in great shape and told CBSSports.com this offseason he's excited for his new role. Consider Portis a No. 1 Fantasy RB worth a pick at the end of the first round. ...

Meant to post this earlier, then got caught up in other stuff. A while back I wrote about the new contract the Redskins bestowed upon RB Clinton Portis, and how some in the organization believed his renewed approach to his offseason work was directly tied to that deal, which included about $16 million in guaranteed money. So today, one of the schlubs - don't remember for sure but I think it was a TV person - asked Zorn casually about Portis's improved attendance around Redskins Park this offseason. Here is Zorn's response: "I think he had a financial motivation to stay here in the offseason," Zorn said. "I think that worked into his contract. And it really not only worked well for him, it worked very well for us because we're going to benefit from everything he did in this weight room during the offseason. And I think he feels ...

Upstairs in Ashburn, the pageantry for the well-coiffed man in the suit was about to begin. Downstairs, away from the Jason Taylor Show, beneath the steps that lead to the weight room and out to the practice field, Clinton Portis slung a green terry-cloth towel over his sweaty head. ...

With the summer storm gods raining down on Redskins Park and the players and fans seeking shelter, Jim Zorn talked briefly to reporters on the morning practice. He said that Clinton Portis turned his ankle and, while they believe the sprain to be minor, the medical staff will check out the injury. Chris Samuels's surgically repaired elbow was a little stiff and sore so he skipped the activities. They're telling Jasno they still believe he'll be ready in plenty of time for real fubball. ... (By John McDonnell - TWP) Serious, as in, not funny. Extremely not funny. This has already been noted by Hog Heaven, but after Clinton Portis discussed his newfound fatherhood with Mike Wise this week, he went on Comcast SportsyNet with Kelli Johnson yesterday and revealed that he had previously lost a child. And in answering her question--which concerned Sean Taylor--he also displayed something of the Cooley Theorem, in a completely different context, which, it goes without saying, I completely endorse. This is football. It's entertainment. It isn't that serious. Here's Portis: ...

Just to make the uncertain quarterback situation even more interesting (and confusing) ... Coach Ralph Friedgen said Josh Portis worked some against the first-team defense at today's practice and fared well. "I thought he had the best day at quarterback,” Friedgen said. “Threw one interception for a touchdown but other than that..." With Chris Turner the incumbent starter and Jordan Steffy also in the mix, Portis doesn't always have the opportunity to work with the first team. "You earn that right," Friedgen said. "I actually told (offensive coordinator) James (Franklin) to put Josh against the first-team defense, and he did a pretty good job. I thought he threw the ball well." Friedgen said Portis still sometimes moves his feet too much before throwing the out pattern -- a hesitation that can disrupt timing. "It used to drive me nuts. Instead of taking a three-step drop, he’ll take one and then a short hop and then a short step," the coach said. ...
