The figurative gauntlet was thrown at Apple's recent Let's Rock event in San Francisco . According to Steve Jobs , the iPod Touch is "the best Portable device for playing games on". That's a grand statement right there, but then again, if you're selling something you wouldn't be touting it as the second-, third-, or whatever-best Gaming device, now would you? To back it up, Phil Schiller, senior VP of product marketing, demoed three iPod Touch games. Two have already been released ( Real Soccer 2009 and Spore Origins ), with the last being the upcoming Need For Speed: Undercover from EA. Apple Gaming hasn't really caught on that much, but it looks like this time Jobs and company are really putting a lot behind marketing the iPod Touch as a Gaming device. The iPod Touch certainly looks like it packs some considerable graphical power under its hood. Then again, the lack of a proper d-pad could throw a wrench into their campaign. So, what do you guys think? Does the iPod Touch have what it takes to go up against the PSP and DS? Filed under: Culture , Nintendo DS , Mac , Sony PSP At today's Apple event (aptly titled "Let's Rock"), Steve Jobs unveiled a new ad for the revised iPod Touch, essentially showcasing the iPod Touch's (and similarly the iPhone's) Gaming capabilities, claiming, "It's the best Portable device for playing games." We're wagering at least a few Sony and Nintendo executives are texting each other "lolwut." As noted by Engadget, "gauntlet: THROWN." Also shown at the Apple event: a new soccer title - Real Soccer 2009 - and Need for Speed Undercover. Check out Engadget for more information from Steve Jobs' presentation. We'll update when the ad is uploaded to the interwebs. [ Update: Apple has launched an updated iPod Touch page on its website, touting the device as "the funnest iPod ever." The page is heavily focused on Gaming and has a "watch the ad" link from the gallery section ... which, as of this writing, is officially slammed.]   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

A big part of Apple's presentation today was focused on Portable Gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch. A challenge has been issued to Nintendo and Sony. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that the iPod Touch (and by extension, the iPhone), is "the best Portable device for playing games." The best? Sure, we love some of the iPhone/Touch games we've played, but they still don't match up to the Nintendo DS and PSP. At least, not yet. Spore Origins was shown off at Apple's event and looks great, but is still a limited game when compared to the full version of Spore or other titles on the DS or PSP. Don't expect to see too many epic RPG's or classic franchises on the iPhone. Another game, Real Soccer 2009 , was shown off and is available for purchase today. Certainly something that should impress the international crowd, but you'll have to come up with something better than soccer for the US, Apple. What do you think? Would you ever give up your PSP or DS for an iPod Touch or would you do what we do and just carry both? Source ...

Apple called out handheld console makers during its "Let's Rock" event in San Francisco this morning, debuting a new iPod Touch ad that directly challenges Nintendo and Sony. "It's the best Portable device for Gaming," said the ad, according to Engadget . Earlier, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had introduced iPod Touch/iPhone games such as Spore Origins, Need for Speed: Undercover, and Real Soccer 2009. Forbes predicted in June that the iPhone could eventually overtake the Nintendo DS as the dominant handheld Gaming platform. About 700 games are now available to download on the platform. Apple reported that it has shifted over 100 million downloads through its App Store during the first 60 days of its operation. <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=10696&i... ...
