Born Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I was the first Pope to choose a double name, a move that honored his two immediate predecessors, Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. Refusing to have the millennium-old traditional papal coronation, he instead opted for a simplified ceremony. His 33-day papacy was one of the shortest reigns in papal history, resulting in the "Year of Three Popes." What were several conspiracy theories that arose at the time of Pope John Paul I's death? ...

The merger of Holy Rosary School in Claymont and St. Helena’s School in Bellefonte into Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School is now a reality. More than 400 parents and students, most of whom live in Claymont or Bellefonte, turned out for a meet-and-great with the new principal and teachers August 27. The first day of school is September 2. Many Catholic parishioners had held out hope that Holy Rosary and St. Helena’s School, which each have about 50 years of history, could continue. But dwindling enrollment at both schools in an area with stagnant birth rates and the demographic shift downstate led Diocese of Wilmington officials to merge the schools and keep Catholic education along Philadelphia Pike. “Our challenge is to create a new identity and I actually think our children will adapt quite easily,” said Principal Monica Malseed. “We have to honor the traditions of the two schools. So, we’ve decided to keep the best of both places – like the father-daughter dance and the fall festivals – while coming up with our own, special activities.” Pope John Paul II will have 286 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and 28 teachers and staff in its inaugural year, said Malseed, who was vice principal at St. Maximilian Kolbe School in West Chester, Pa. Margaret Toy, whose son Taylor is an eighth-grade and daughter Margaret Toy is fourth-grader, are from St. Helena’s. “At first it was hard to hear but we’re very glad ...

When the DreamWorks logo appeared on the movie screen, children grabbed their kites and soccer balls and came running from the grassy fields. Sheila Traphagen already was seated close to the outdoor screen, munching popcorn in anticipation of the start of  ``Mousetrap.''    ``This is the perfect movie experience,'' said Traphagen of Dorchester, who brought her two children and their neighborhood friends to the Family Movie Series at Pope John Paul II Park. ``I love being outside and watching the movie and staring up at the sky. My kids also play soccer here and we come here all the time, so often we should set up a tent.''    The weekly movies are one of many activities at the park, a 70-acre recreational area by the Neponset River in Dorchester. Once the site of a landfill and the Neponset Drive-In, the 7-year-old park now is a riverbank oasis. On a late afternoon recently, people walked, rode bikes, and  skated along paved paths bordering the restored marsh, as the sun sparkled on the water and the grasses waved in the cooling breeze.    Like the Charles River Esplanade on Storrow Drive, the park seemed to blot out the nearby  traffic.    ``It’s peaceful, even though it’s near the highway,'' said Rory Concannon of Dorchester, pushing his 8-month-old daughter in a stroller. ``We like being near the water and the fresh air.''     Certainly, the park’s rolling green expanse dotted by sun shelters can’t be appreciated looking throu ...

The St. Helena Star ran this article about two weeks ago about a career diplomat with the U.S. Foreign Service. I think the lengthy article is a great read about a diplomat's life. Grandma and Grandpa 'Hat Rack immediately chimed in that the quotes weren't entirely accurate, but even so, I think there's nothing to be ashamed about. Here's to 25 unforgettable years of service to the United States. I know I'm proud. ...

ST. Paul -- The tone at a Maryland delegation breakfast this morning seemed dialed back, in keeping with the spirit of today's GOP convention. But several speakers sang the praises of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), the recently named running mate of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Louis Pope, a Maryland delegate who is a member of the Republican National Committee, related how he and other members of the RNC's rules committee were tearing up in joy last week as they took a break in their proceedings and watched the Palin announcement on television. "It's really unreal, thinking two days earlier, she was shooting caribou in Alaska," said Pope, who praised Palin's family and conservative credentials. "I think it's phenomenal, what John McCain did." The focus of the breakfast was mostly housekeeping and updates on how Gustav is affecting the convention. Among those offering tips was Don Murphy, a former state ...
