Who are the top 10 biggest Pop music Stars of the past 25 years, according to the ARC Weekly Top 40 charts? (The ARC Weekly Top 40 has been around since 1980 and measures popular songs based on radio airplay and singles sales. It’s not affiliated with the Billboard chart, but it’s definitely a good indicator of what’s popular in music at a certain time). I actually found a list of the ARC top 500 Pop Stars of the past 25 years, but let’s limit the question to the top 10. I’ll post a link to the full 500 tomorrow or Wednesday when I list the answers. In case you haven’t heard, Jessica Simpson has a country album due out in September . Yes, you read that right. As an admitted fan of country music , I have mixed feelings about the move. Simpson doesn’t have the best track record as an artist, so I haven’t been too convinced that a change in genre will do her much good. But, the release of her first country single is changing lots of minds. I’m still not entirely sure what to think, but I do have to admit that “Come on Over” is a bit catchy. (You can hear it on Simpson’s MySpace page .) Her voice is still too airy for my taste, but since I have already been caught singing along to the song, I can’t hate on it too much. It’s still too early to tell whether Simpson’s genre-jumping will pay off or not, but let’s look at some others who have successfully made the leap. read more ...

Country and Pop. Pop and country. For years the musical genres have borrowed from each other as well as invaded each other's territories. That's even more present now with former Pop Stars Jewel and Jessica Simpson recently making their switches to country. So let's take a look at some of the artists who began with Pop, or dabbled in it simultaneously, before making the complete leap to country. Jewel Some of her Pop-folk proved engaging, particularly 1996's "You Were Meant for Me" and 2001's "Standing Still." But the Utah-born, Alaska-reared Jewel Kilcher hasn't a clue about real country music, judging by her paltry Nashville debut CD, "Perfectly Clear." Her wispy diary musings about love have no business in a honky-tonk. Despite this, she's a judge on NBC's reality TV show, "Nashville Star." Go figure. Jessica Simpson The Pop diva and tabloid queen has announced she's moving over to country for good. Well, hmm, the jury hasn't yet decided whether this is an artistically sound decision.
