The ambience was perfect-the flower island of Mainau in Lake Constance in southern Germany -- to debate the subject of ‘sustainability and climate change' with some 600 students, media persons and 23 Nobel laureates. The panel couldn't have been better with the IPCC chairman RK Pachauri, atmospheric chemist and Nobel winner Mario Molina, German minister or science, education and research Q Thielen, Copenhagen business school professor (and often the contrarian stance holder) Bjorn Lomborg and others. Pachauri (left) and Lomborg And we finally got to hear what many in the developing world have been waiting to hear - Pachauri taking a stance publicly (he said - ‘I make a statement here.') on the developed world making deeper cuts in carbon emissions. "The developed world never had to pay a price (in terms of emission costs) for economic development which the developing world is now facing," he said. It was as much a battle of wits as of facts. And a discussion which surprisingly began with Lomborg agreeing with Pachauri (they almost never agree on climate issues) and others on the seriousness of climate change soon had them in disagreement. Opinions flew thick and fast with the moderator Geoffrey Carr, science editor of The Economist, mocking the global investment in fusion research and Bern University professor Thomas Stocker critiquing the efforts of geo-engineering. Funnily, those folks didn't realize that several stalwarts of ba ...

I read this story and just wonder when the circus will ever leave Detroit.   Via Freep Detroit --One week after pleading guilty to a five-year felony, Monica Conyers faces more legal woes, after a former staffer filed a lawsuit this week alleging the councilwoman threatened to fire her over handwriting, coffee cups and telephone greetings.   Shanise Robinson's lawsuit alleges she worked for Conyers for a month in January 2008, and the councilwoman did nothing to stop sexual harassment by another employee, Dale Foster, who is a candidate for the City Council.   The Wayne County suit, which seeks unspecified damages, alleges Robinson quit after Conyers threatened to fire her for: Using, or appearing to use, the 'wrong' coffee mug." • Answering the phone using Conyers' title as "council president pro-tem" when Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr. was overseas. Conyers "concluded that his absence automatically elevated her to the position of council president and that her phone should be answered" with that title, the suit said. • Signing Conyers' signature to a resolution in a "sloppy" manner. A spokeswoman for Conyers, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bribery and resigns Monday, couldn't be reached. Foster, who is a defendant in the suit, called Robinson "money hungry."   "She has been harassing Dale Foster," Foster said. "This has been a continuing effort to tarnish my name. She doesn't have a leg to stand on." Foster said he w ...

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee March 2, 2008 in Houston, Texas Photo: Dave Einsel/Getty Images Although Mike Huckabee may not have a theology degree, he has been and continues to be an ordained Baptist minister. Why did he make the move from the pulpit to political life? According to Huckabee, he wanted to bring Jesus Christ to the nation: "I didn't get into Politics because I thought government had a better answer. I got into Politics because I knew government didn't have the real answers, that the real answers lie in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives." He also said "I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ." Although he admits that he would phrase it differently today, he doesn't repudiate his original views.
