When voters hear the words "bipartisan cooperation," they envision lawmakers reaching across party lines to make things happen. But in Michigan's divided state Legislature, the object of bipartisan cooperation is often to make sure that nothing happens, and that neither party gets the blame when a popular initiative goes down in flames. If you want to see the bipartisan butt-covering process in action, just keep your eye on the indoor-smoking ban that House Democrats and Senate Republicans are supposedly determined to impose on Michigan restaurants. Smoking opponents were cheered last week when state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, unexpectedly allowed a bill that would ban indoor smoking in all public establishments to come to a floor vote. The bill passed by a 25-12 vote, and with the Democratic House already on record in support of a similar measure, the ban seemed destined for the desk of Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who has promised to sign it. The Senate's poison pill But of course, it's not that simple. State Rep. Bert Johnson, D-Detroit, who chairs the House Detroit caucus, joined with most of his Democratic colleagues in supporting the House's smoking ban, which -- unlike the Senate version -- exempted Detroit's casinos. Now Johnson is worried that Detroit's casinos will lay off workers if the Senate's broader bill prevails. He says he'll withdraw his support for a smoking ban unless the exempt ... John Hagee once called the Roman church "the great whore." He also called the Roman church "apostate." But now that he's endorsed John McCain, Hagee is retracting all the mean things he said about the Roman church. The first and greatest evangelical political commandment is this: "Use your influence to get the right man elected." And the second is like it. "If it will help, apologize for all of the offensive things you said beforehand, even if those offensive things are truths deeply held." Lee Irons has posted an amazing video of old folks getting "jiggy with it" during the liturgy at the church of "What's Happening Now." There is liturgical dance, there are paper mache giants, and you can almost hear them chant "great is Diana of the Ephesians!" Amazing what happens in churches which don't see any use for the gospel. Dallas Morning News : The idea that the Bush administration has placed science under attack is so commonplace now that it's almost cliché. It's hard to think of a government agency staffed by scientists that has not seen scandals over the past several years involving the suppression and twisting of information or the intimidation of researchers. So scientists are resisting, right? Well, there are a few pro-science organizations that ritually denounce the abuse. Angry statements have been signed by Nobel laureates. And government reforms have been proposed to curtail future misbehavior. But when it comes to real political action – engaging in strategic communication campaigns on hot-button issues, rating politicians based on their science records, even trying to unseat some of science's greatest enemies – scientists have tended to back away. If the science community wants to reclaim the ground lost during the Bush administration, it's going to have to accept that the old policy of political disengagement is showing its age. ... David Brant on the Politics of 'black gold'. With oil prices flowing relentlessly upward—at least for the time being—and gasoline prices naturally, inevitably following suit, it should be clear to all educated adults, reglardless of whehter or not they are economists or day-traders, why these prices are going up. We are all taught in school, well before our college-age years, of the law of supply and demand. Assuming that demand remains constant, when supply goes down, prices go up; when (...) - Politics / International , Hightlight , Ground Report ... Source: www.volconvo.com --- 5 minutes ago
Fear, Atheism, and Politics Play Role in Evangelical Manifesto The recent Evangelical Manifesto is all about Politics and fear. Despite claiming to depoliticize the religion the document actually plays on Christianitys fear of atheism in the US in order to manipulate American Politics. The Manifesto, written by Os Guinness, portrays two opposing possibilities for religious discourse in American society, the naked public square and the civil public square. Guinness presents the two possible choices for the future of America, one being the right path, the other disastrous for America. He warns of dangers of the naked public square, which according to the Evangelical Manifesto, is completely devoid of religion or spirituality in public life. In contrast the document promotes a so-called civil public square, which would allow for expression of religion and spirituality in the public domain.... read more at: http://obtuseword.blogspot.com/2008/05/fear-atheism-and-Politics-play-role-in.html ...
