Reinforcements made the 1927 downtown firehouse floor strong enough to bear the weight of modern fire trucks and ambulances. A trailer behind the Police station provides women officers and employees with lockers and bathrooms not included when the building went up in 1978. Piecemeal upgrades like these appear throughout the town's Police and fire Stations, added to keep up with changing times and evolving professions. But Fire Chief Bill Kee and Police Chief Scott Rohmer say a report issued to selectmen last week confirms what they already see - overall, Ashland's public safety buildings and their setups are obsolete for this growing town. "This facility here for the Police Department doesn't meet the needs for the officers or the community," Rohmer said Tuesday. "We're just trying to limp through with things." Selectmen have not decided whether to pursue the report's recommendation to build a consolidated public safety complex somewhere between Chestnut, East Union and Waverly streets. Selectman Phil Jack said last week the board may look to ask fall Town Meeting to buy property in that area. The board plans to discuss the report Aug. 6. Kee said building a new station right away may not be an immediate priority. But he detailed shortcomings of both Ashland fire Stations, and he said the town has a responsibility to identify those problems, get input on them and start planning now for the future. "It needs to happen," Kee said. ...

The town should build a consolidated public safety complex between Chestnut and Waverly streets to replace its fire and Police Stations, which are outdated and cramped, a consultant told selectmen last night. PDF: Study calls for combined Stations Ideally, the town should buy at least 3 to 5 acres in that neighborhood and construct a facility between 40,000 and 55,000 square feet, said Mark Morse, president of MMA Consulting Group. Construction could cost roughly $300 per square foot, Morse said. That would put the price tag for such a project at $12 million to $15 million. The recommendations are part of a just-finished 76-page study. Town Meeting authorized funding for it in 2006. "We need to plan for 25 and 30 years down the road," Fire Chief Bill Kee told the Board of Selectmen. The board held off discussing exactly what to do about the report. "At our next meeting will be a discussion about the next step," Chairman Paul Monaco said. However, Selectman Philip Jack said the board may try to bring a land purchase for a public safety building to Town Meeting by the fall. In the meantime, Kee will continue talks with Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty about how the two towns could share or combine some fire protection services, Town Manager John Petrin said. Among other things, local officials have discussed a possible shared fire substation on the town line. The outcome of those talks could determine if a new public safety complex wo ...
