Hunting Polar bears is illegal in the United States. The recent decision to list the Polar Bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act closed a gaping loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that had allowed wealthy U.S. trophy hunters to kill Polar bears in Canada, where such hunting is legal, and import Polar Bear trophies into the U.S. But now Safari Club International, a big game trophy hunters' club, is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reverse this ban on importing Polar Bear trophies. More than 900 Polar Bear heads and hides had been imported into the U.S since 1994 because of the MMPA loophole. We have to do everything we can to prevent the Polar Bear's downward spiral. We need the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stand strong on Polar Bear trophy hunting - urge Director Dale Hall to uphold the ban on importing Polar Bear hunting trophies from Canada. Take Action ...

"I used to work with the dolphins at the Coney Island Aquarium," said Celia Ackerman, "but when I got here and saw the Polar bears, I was immediately converted." Ackerman has been the Bear keeper at the Central Park Zoo since about 1990, and because the only bears on exhibit are the Polar bears Gus and Ida, she is, in fact, the Polar Bear keeper. read more ... Arctic Slope Regional Corp. filed a request to intervene in the Polar Bear lawsuit on behalf of its Iñupiat Alaska Native shareholders. The lawsuit, filed by the Center for Biological Diversity is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. If the motion to intervene is allowed, ASRC will be heard on all procedural and substantive issues in the case, thus ensuring that concerns for the corporation and its shareholders will be addressed. The motion to intervene was filed on July 3, 2008. The corporation said the lawsuit could have a dire effect on every resource and economic development project on the North Slope of Alaska, and could impact the rest of the country in a variety of ways. They added that while the corporation is concerned about climate change, the action taken by the environmental industry could circumvent the legislative process and appears to be an effort to address the global issue of climate change through restrictions on arctic activities which have not caused climate change or had a measurable effect on Polar bears. “ASRC shareholders are the indigenous people of Alaska’s North Slope and share the same environment with the Polar bears,” said Tara Sweeney, ASRC Vice President of External Affairs. “Any decisions made in response to the Polar Bear suit will directly impact the communities of many ASRC shareholders” The decision by ASRC to intervene in this lawsuit was made by th ... Canadians argue for Polar Bear hunt By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer Mon Jun 23, 8:38 PM ET WASHINGTON - Officials from northern Canada were in Washington on Monday to make an unpopular argument: Let U.S. hunters continue to kill Polar bears for sport. The politicians from Canada's Northwest Territory asked Interior Department officials to allow U.S. sportsmen to still bring back Polar Bear hides after their hunts in Canada's Arctic region, despite the increased protection now afforded the Bear under the Endangered Species Act. The United States bans sport hunting of Polar bears, but Canada does not, although it restricts the hunting season to two months and limits the number of kills. The recent decision to declare the Polar Bear threatened under the Endangered Species Act also means U.S. sportsmen may no longer bring home trophy skins - which is what hunting's high-rollers actually prize. This "will effectively wipe out our sports hunting industry," Bob McLeod, the Northwest Territory's minister for energy, industry and tourism, said Monday in an interview. He said it will wipe out most of the income for people living in a handful of villages along the province's Arctic coast. He said hunters, mostly from the United States, spend an estimated $1.6 million annually during the Polar Bear hunts, much of it going into the economies of the isolated villages where the hunts are organized and concentrated. McLeod said people who ... Source: www.scifirstforhunters.org --- 3 days ago
