Placido Polanco had three hits and drove in three runs to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. Mike Hessman homered for Detroit, which won for only the third time in 10 games. Mark Teixeira hit a home run for Los Angeles, which saw its magic number to clinch the A.L. West remain at eight. With the Tigers down 6-5 in the seventh, Brandon Inge led off with a single off reliever Jose Arredondo (7-2). Curtis Granderson then tripled to tie the game and Polanco followed with a single to put Detroit on top. Arredondo surrendered two runs and three hits in an inning. Hessman added his first homer of the season in the eighth, with a man on. Kyle Farnsworth (2-2) allowed three hits and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings to earn the win. Fernando Rodney got out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth for his eighth save in 12 chances. He loaded the bases with one out, but got Kendry Morales on a foul pop and fanned Mike Napoli to end the game. Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the first. Magglio Ordonez singled in Granderson, who led off with a single and went to third on Polanco’s hit-and-run single. Ordonez’s hit sent Polanco to third and he scored on Miguel Cabrera’s sacrifice fly. Teixeira put Los Angeles on the board with one out in the fourth with his ninth home run. There was a meeting of commissioners at the Board of Elections today, but this issue was not discussed, according to J.C. Polanco one of the Bronx commissioners who just e-mailed me. Polanco says the jurisdiction is probably with the state Board of Elections. I seem to have missed the ball on this (yes, I know you'll find this hard to believe but reporters are fallible) since I just noticed that Liz also reported that Heastie's lawyer, Stanley Schlein, filed certification papers with the STATE Board of Elections. Liz also reports that Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn is introducing legislation to require a voter referendum to change term limits laws anywhere in the state. As Liz Benjamin of the Daily News Poltiicker blog reported on Friday , Stanley Schlein, the lawyer for the group of Bronx pols who have claimed victory in their bid to replace Jose Rivera as county leader, has filed “general objections” to Rivera’s certification of his own victory with the Board of Elections. This is the latest salvo in a battle that may end up in court. Now, we’re wondering whether any of this will be discussed at a meeting of the Board of Elections’ commissioners tomorrow . We spoke to both Bronx commissioners (there is one Republican and one Democratic commissioner from each borough, though Queens currently has two vacancies), Nero Graham (the Democrat) and J.C. Polanco (the Republican). Neither knew whether this issue would come before the commissioners tomorrow, but it’s hard to imagine there won’t be at least some discussion of it. Stay tuned. ...
