Lovely is a word often used in describing Elbow's music and much the same can be said of their website, not least the front page which tinkles and sparkles for your mouse. I've been using Actiontec from Verizon as a DSL/Switch/AP combo, but recently with addition of new laptop I noticed that it's wireless mode locks up and requires manual reset. Other than that it is great Linux based piece of hardware. Here is my current setup: Wired: Docked Laptop Server VoIP Phone (Packet8) Power Hungry Workstation Wireless: Laser Printer 2 Laptops (wifiG) (if undocked) 1 Laptop (wifiN) Playstation 3 UMA-enabled Phone (BB Pearl) Palm T|X (wifiB) (rarely used) Except for Phone all wired connections are gigabit compatible. Though it was originally scheduled for release in November of this year, the videogame adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been pushed back to Summer 2009. The new release window will allow the game to hit shelves the same day that the Half-Blood Prince film adaptation lands in movie theaters. An interesting tactic, but as Gamasutra points out in their coverage of the announcement , shares of publisher Electronic Arts dropped 3 percent once the news was revealed. When the game finally does hit shelves, fans will be able to purchase it for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Playstation 2, PSP, Windows PC, Mac and mobile Phone platforms. There are some things we were never meant to see. Now, thanks to high definition technology, we can see them only too clearly. The cathode ray tube has, sometime in the last year or so, vanished from TV showrooms. Nobody mourns its passing; it was basically a gun firing radiation at goggle-eyed viewers. Besides, you go out to buy a TV now and there's a sea of gorgeous, shiny new flat-screen LCDs and plasmas to wade through, most bearing a sticker claiming they are, as you should be by now, " HD Ready ". When we eventually join this century by getting the fibre optic Phone lines we deserve, pretty much everything we watch will be in some form of HD. At the moment, Blu-ray is the frontline for getting these close-to-perfect, four-times-clearer-than-DVD images into our homes. But unless you have a Playstation 3 or have invested in a stand-alone player, HD is still something from the future. Now, I watch a lot of films. Loads of them, for work and pleasure, on a variety of formats. From small screening rooms to large West End cinemas and IMAX screens; from DVDs to downloads. The variety in terms of picture quality can be staggering, but it's all infinitely better than the virtually unwatchable VHS bootlegs of A Clockwork Orange and Last House On The Left I happily endured in my youth. Next week, “Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway” will finally launch on the Xbox 360 and Playstation. The week after, PC gamers can join the World War II party. But, what’s taken Gearbox Software so long? The latest “Brothers in Arms” was announced in April 2006 and scheduled for a holiday 2006 release. Then, it was delayed…and delayed…and delayed. Almost two years after its original date, however, Gearbox’s shooter is finally done, which makes the game’s director, Jeramy Cooke , a very happy man. In a Phone interview with MTV Multiplayer yesterday afternoon, Cooke pointed to Gearbox’s ambitious for multi-platform development for the long wait. “In previous ‘Brothers in Arms,’ we had farmed out the Playstation versions” “This is the first time we have done a big, multi-platform game in-house, and it was brand-new technology, as well,” explained Cooke. “You kind of expect when you buy off-the-shelf software [Unreal Engine 3] that you’re just going to be up and running on all three platforms. We made a lot of changes to the engine, so each platform reacts to those changes differently. There’s a lot to follow up and that kind of stuff, trying to make it work right on all the different platforms.” While the changes and tweaks made to the existing technology from Epic Games complicated matters, it was the PS3 version that gave Gearbox the most trouble. Of course, as so many modern conveniences are apt to, it's not without disadvantages. In the case of PS3's video store , one of them is the fact that, should you want to free up HDD space by deleting a video and then attempt to download it again later, you'll quickly find yourself on the Phone with a Sony customer service representative. (Plus, you might actually have to get up to call them - ouch !) Oh, the rep will happily flip a switch somewhere enabling you to re-download the video in question ... but only once. Make the same mistake twice and you're stuck. In this case, whether you actually "own" what you've paid for is more than a little fuzzy. Of course, you could take advantage of one of the PS3's nicer features and simply install a larger off-the-shelf hard disk by yourself. And, since Sony's been so kind as to provide a PS3 Backup Utility for migrating your data, those videos will transfer right over ... right? Not so fast. According to the utility's documentation, purchased and rented PSN video store content may not play following the transfer process. For only a very few will it jog memories of a Japan-only PS1 release titled The Silver Case , which the designer announced is headed for PSN at the "Foreign Video Game Unlawful Assembly 2K8" he organized (and so wonderfully named). It's not clear if the release will be Japan-only, although it has been previously announced that English-language Nintendo DS versions of a remade The Silver Case and its mobile Phone sequel, Silver Case, 25 Ward are in the works. In news that will please many and piss off many others, George Lucas is indeed involved with the plot of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed . Of course, as the creator of the franchise, many are thrilled to have his direct involvement in the upcoming game. But as the guy some say tarnished the franchise with those last three crappy movies many are cringing. "George gave us a history lesson about what the major characters in the Saga were doing in that time frame, and offered feedback and suggestions about the plot and characters,” says Force Unleashed executive producer Haden Blackman, who noted that Lucas has been involved in the entire 4-year development cycle. In case ya didn’t know, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a multimedia project developed by LucasArts along with Dark Horse Comics, Lego, Hasbro, and Del Rey Books that consists of a videogame, a tie-in novel, action figures, a comic book, a reference book and a role-playing game supplement, as well as a book on the making of the game. Blu-ray players are finally reaching the level of affordability that will allow most consumers to upgrade to the technology. Making it the first Blu-ray player from Sony to be cheaper than the PS3, the mainstream BDP-S350 Blu-ray player can be yours for a cool $299.99. Adding icing to the cake is the fact that it is one of the few players out there that supports BD-LIVE that allows content downloads from the web. You’ll, however, have to manually update the firmware on the player, but that will take only a couple of minutes at most. Sony has big plans for Japan . Their latest PSP 3000 is expected to be launched on October 16th. The new gaming device will have ready a 4.3 inch high resolution wide screen, anti-reflection technology, a built-in microphone, Skype and other communication tools. There’s a video port which will let you take the game to your closest TV through the separately sold cables. Compared to this latest rumor, the “leaked” iPod dimensions look positively concrete. Investment bank RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky has told investors that he expects Apple is working on an “entry level, low cost (less than $99 subsidized) prepaid iPod/Phone” that would concentrate solely on music and Phone calls. The device, Abramsky continues, would allow Apple to commercialize the entry level market currently unable to afford the iPhone 3G or its related monthly tariffs. Describing such a strategy as to ”capture an untapped global opportunity”, he fingers the residual effect “boost[ing] iPhone’s momentum by 50 to 100 percent” while also leading to eventual upgrades to the full iPhone 3G and even Mac computers. Abramsky expects Apple to announce iPhone 3G sales at the September 9th event , with his prediction being 5.1 million 3G handsets in the September quarter and 14 million total iPhone units for the calendar year. However he admits that his iPod/Phone idea is unsupported by any hard evidence. I finally broke down and bought a Bluetooth earpiece today. This was hard for me, because I hate people who use them. I hate walking into someone’s office at work, having them say hi, and then being embarrassed when I say hi back and realize they’re actually talking on their stupid Bluetooth earpiece. But there’s been a number of times this month when I’ve come close to getting caught using my cellphone in the car, and sooner or later I’ll get a ticket for it. So I ordered a Plantronics Voyager 815 . It’s small, looks nice, uses noise-canceling technology, and has multipoint so I can switch between using it for my Phone and my Playstation 3 without having to resync it to either device in between. Also, I’ve heard it will give you a handjob if you charge it long enough. I will not , however, use this thing while walking down the street, sitting at my desk, or other times where it’s completely unnecessary to be hands-free. I will not be a weirdo fuckface who looks like he’s talking to himself. I will use it only for talking in the car and for yelling racial slurs at children who are playing against me on Call of Duty 4. ...
I had to think a little bit about what the most expensive piece of technology I owned was. Not because I spend money like it's goin' out of style, but because I have made so many gadget investments in the last few years that I had to figure out which topped the list. So far, I think it's my MacBook Pro, although my HDTV comes in very close. Following that is my Canon DSLR, and right on its heels is my Playstation 3 (and I don't even want to ask my boyfriend how much his high-def video camera was). I'm trying to slow it down, considering this economic crisis that's hitting everything, but all I can do is think about the HD TiVo XL that I don't yet have, sigh.
