Penfield Patriots assistant coach Mike DeClerck figured Tuesday night's Babe Ruth Senior League second-round Playoff game against the Brighton Blue Sox at Bachman Field was going to be a tight one. “This is going to be a tough game," he said before the first pitch. “We beat them both times, but the scores were 2-1 and 9-8.” DeClerck was correct as the top-seeded Patriots needed eight innings to knock off the No. 9-seeded Blue Sox, 5-4. James Tantalo delivered a bases-loaded Baltimore chop through the right side of the infield to drive home Mick Ercole with the game-winning run. The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Nick Bott scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Pat Zornow. The Blue Sox forged ahead with two runs in the third. Andy Seil and Ted Ruff both reached on walks by Penfield hurler Scott Trostle. Seil stole second, third, and home, on a delayed steal, to account for the tying run. Larry Lawrence singled in Ruff for a Brighton 2-1 advantage. However, in the home half of the frame, the Patriots countered with two runs of their own to retake the lead. Tantalo singled in the tying run and Travis Lisena put the hosts ahead when he scored on an errant throw to second. Penfield went up 4-2 in the fourth when David Locke knocked in Zornow, who had reached on an error. The Blue Sox knotted the count with a pair of runs in the fifth. Jake Nally led off with a single. Ruff drew a one-out walk. Walks to Lawrence and Andrew Graf ...

LITTLE FALLS POST 7, HERKIMER POST 2 LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — A little extra work to get the field ready Tuesday night paid off for Little Falls Post 31. Dan Wiecek threw a no-hitter and pitched Little Falls Post into the Herkimer County championship series with a 7-2 victory over Herkimer Post 38 at Veterans Memorial Park. Heavy rain in the middle of the afternoon led the teams initially to postpone the game until Wednesday. When the weather cleared as quickly as it had soured, the game was back on and got under way about 40 minutes after its original scheduled start time. Wiecek was dominant from the start. He set the side down in order in the top of the first inning and had a 2-0 lead before taking the ball back out to the mound to pitch the second. He struck out nine Herkimer Post batters, three of them looking, while walking one in the fifth inning and hitting another in the second. The no-hitter followed a three-hit, five-inning shutout of Herkimer Post in Wiecek’s last start Friday. “As the innings went by I seemed to get a little looser,” said Wiecek who played on a state championship team at Fort Plain High School last spring and won a regional Playoff game this spring to put the Hilltoppers back in the Class C Final Four. Little Falls Post did its scoring early with two runs coming in the first inning and five in the second. Paul Barnes drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, stole second base and scored on a one-out single ...

Brennan Hegel tossed out a rope that cleared the left field fence at Joe Martin Field. He didn’t know it at the time, but it was a lifeline for the Prince George Cap-abliities All-Stars.Hegel’s grand slam triggered a seven-run second inning that vaulted the host team to a 9-0 lead. Believe it or not, it wasn’t quite enough to finish off Dunbar on Wednesday night in the 11-12-year-old Little League provincial championship. Conjuring up memories of a sixth-inning collapse Tuesday that saw Cap-abilities blow a five-run lead and lose to undefeated White Rock, Prince George watched its huge lead slip away again Wednesday but managed to hang on to a 14-11 victory that kept the host team’s Playoff hopes alive. They’ll need some help, but it’s still a possibility heading into the final day of round-robin play at the eight-team tournament.Nursing a 2-0 lead, Caps jumped all over Dunbar pitcher Jason... ...

There wasn't much drama in a Thursday Playoff at the Peoria Men's City golf tournament. In fact, there was hardly a Playoff at all. The 13 players who shot 78 in qualifying at Newman Golf Course were scheduled to play off at 3 p.m. for the remaining six spots in Championship flight. Four of them - Ken Hartman, Jerry Maushard, Matt McCaw and Chris Waible - called to say they wouldn't be at the Playoff. Two others - Russel Gibson and Shawn Blum - didn't show, either, which left seven players competing for six spots. When Jeff Ackerman butchered the par-4 first hole with a double bogey, that was it. Matt Schifeling, Rob Terlesky, Nathan Turner, Aaron Lorentz, Jim Krick and Ryan Gehlsen claimed the last six spots in the field of 64. Ackerman, a semifinalist in 2002, hit his drive right, thinnned his second shot over the green, left a pitch short, hit a chip long and couldn't make a bogey save of more than 10 feet. He walked back to the clubhouse alone and to the parking lot without comment. "That's not quite the way I wanted in" said Schifeling, who made a bogey but will play in Championship flight for the first time. "But I'll take it." A C-flight Playoff wasn't necessary. There were 13 players competing for the final 12 spots in the overall field of 160, but Mike Rocke dropped out. Match-play pairings will be posted at Newman today and published in Sunday editions of the Journal Star. Greg Stewart can be reached at 686-3202 or gste ...
