Filed under: Gaming , Home Entertainment After a long long delay from that March 2007 announcement , Sony Japan just opened its doors to applications for the closed beta testing of PlayStation Home . Sony expects to drop 10,000 gamers (18 years old and up) into the virtual world when it launches in beta sometime in late August. Closed beta tests are due in other markets (er hem, the US) at about the same time with an open beta coming sometime later in the year. Lucky beta testers will be able to explore the 3D world and play games like PacMan in the Namco Museum, both of which are pictured after the break. We know; if we tell you that PlayStation Home 's closed beta is nearing its completion, you'd go like "hasn't it been nearing its completion forever?" While we concede that you'd be excused for feeling a little sour about the whole thing, we've got some welcome news for you. Kotaku reports that the extended closed beta for Home in the United States could be dropping in a week or two. This means that gaming press will be in on the virtual world, which is a good sign that the rest of the PS3 community isn't too far along. Sure, this isn't as dramatic as Japan adding 10,000 beta testers to its version of Home, but it's a significant sign of progress. Hang in there, people. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Online No previous job experience necessary. No references or extracurriculars. Heck, you don't even need a first grade diploma. All you need to do is download the PlayStation Home PS3 theme released today on the PS Store and you'll have applied for access to the expanded Home beta test (a mundane magical world brimming with "stuff" -- just like real life ... only avoidable). Of course, there's one thing you can do to make sure your application rises to the top of the heap: Play. "We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PlayStation Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community," Home director Jack Buser explains on PlayStation.Blog . If you do make the cut, please remember to wear your hard hat. This Home is still very much under construction. [Via PS3 Fanboy ] Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Online Those looking to help iron out the kinks in Sony's silicon-powered social gathering space, PlayStation Home , can now add Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan as valid entry locations for the program's closed beta. Sony's Hong Kong site (via Edge ) is already asking readers to check back on August 29th for information on the test, which is expected to begin in mid-September. Edge also notes that an open beta will commence this Fall, coinciding with similar events in Europe and the US. The more the merrier we say ... even if everybody in the virtual room is just whining about how a plain ol' menu would suffice. Another batch of closed beta invites have gone out for Sony's Home service, this time to those who downloaded the PlayStation 3 Home theme from the PlayStation Store. If you haven't already done so, check your e-mail address(es) to see if you've been selected. We've heard from scores of folks who've been plucked from the PS3-owning masses and are watching the download progress bar tick ever higher right now. Just think, you could be staring into virtual space with a bad haircut and low quality streetwear with thousands of other folks by tonight! No Home beta invite for me yet, but I'll be sexually harassing the lot of you via a fiber optic connection the minute it arrives. Bank on it! ...

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Online With the next phase of PlayStation Home construction getting underway , we now have a clear picture of the region restrictions placed on the virtual world, at least those being implemented for the expanded beta. Users are apparently being matched to servers based on their consoles' native regions (which are not configurable), PS3 Fanboy reports. While this peculiar restriction will only affect the small percentage of PlayStation 3 owners whose consoles were imported from other regions, it counters the open access granted to PlayStation Store users, who can shop in any Store region from anywhere by setting up PSN accounts based in different regions. The Home region restrictions also mean that make-believers won't be mingling internationally nor will they be able to sign into their Japanese PSN IDs from an American console, for example, and hop onto a Japanese server. PS3 Fanboy points out that the obvious explanation for the lockdown is optimized advertising. There's no sense in pushing American products on a UK gamer who is bird watching on a US server. Still, we're holding onto hope for some cross-regional opportunities, like tournaments or maybe exchange programs. Who's up for a semester in the Caribbean Home ? Home is highly anticipated throughout the PlayStation community. Many are saying that this is going to change the way we socialise on our consoles, and we here at That Gaming Site agree, well just myself and Ankido. Mehar our Xbox reporter and founder of the site, has different opinions, which will be expressed a bit later on. Innovation seems to be a huge part of the Sony label. They keep bringing new creations and ideas to the table all the time. We’ve heard and seen the likes of Eye Pet, MAG, Little Big Planet, and the big Sony project, they called Home. Like I said before. Home is highly anticipated by many and is set to deliver a whole new console experience. So with all this hype and excitement surrounding Home, Microsoft must be slightly worried? Or so we would all assume right? What "Game Plan" does Microsoft have to tackle the long awaited release of Home? Is it the new Dash Board and avatars? We will start with my opinions on this. My opinion: From what we have all heard about Home, it really does seem to be amazingly great and I hope the final product turns out like that. So if Home does arrive with all the mentioned features and more, I believe Microsoft really should worry. Based on everything I have seen surrounding Home and the new dash board, Home has my vote. Home seems and feels fresher, there is so much to it, than a new look. The whole idea of encouraging socialisation has been expanded beyond the cam chats and mess ...
