Plenty of pregame tidbits: • Jerry Manuel said he plans to use Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans as a virtual Platoon in left field for the time being, with Fernando Tatis the regular right fielder and Endy Chavez moving to fourth outfielder/defensive replacement. Murphy played left field on a limited basis this year, and played right field for a season and a half at Jacksonville University. He shouldn’t play much infield with the Mets. Evans should start Sunday against Randy Wolf. • Beltran said he didn’t care about the move to No. 2, noting his struggles are about his timing being off. • Marlon Anderson said his left leg hasn’t been right since May, when he injured it in Denver. Basically, a hamstring tendon by the knee is gone, making it unstable. Anderson needs to build up his strength around the area. Anderson said Manuel spotted him laboring and told him to go on the DL to get it right. It’s the same injury Scott Schoeneweis dealt with last year. • Luis Castillo, off today, should play five innings at second base for the Gulf Coast League on Sunday. ...

Atlanta - Another experiment abandoned. Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost has implemented uncommon, out-of-the-ordinary and never-heard-of ideas this season. He hit his pitcher eighth for a while, he batted Prince Fielder third and Ryan Braun fourth and most recently he used a home-road Platoon between Dave Bush and Seth McClung. And just like the first two, the Platoon idea is no more. Bush will solely take over that spot in the rotation and to his displeasure, McClung will be moved back to the bullpen, Yost announced Saturday. Bush will start Tuesday in Cincinnati, his first on the road since June 30 at Arizona. "The reason we did that is two fold," Yost said. "'Bushie' up until the point we started this was on a pretty good role. Two, he has been a starter with us for the last two years." But wait; there was one more fold to be unfolded. "And three, Seth fits a little better in the ‘pen. It's easier to bring Seth in in a situation in the middle of an inning or to shutdown an inning. I don't envision him as a long guy. Fifth, sixth, seventh inning type stuff. "I told them both that I wanted try this and if it wasn't good for either one of them, then I'd have to make a decision." Here are the reactions from both pitchers: "I'm extremely disappointed in the decision," McClung said. "All I've done this year is do what I was asked, and done it well, and I'll continue to do that. Hopefully I pitch more often than I have, and I asked ...

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Frank Beamer said Virginia Tech needed both Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon at quarterback to win the ACC title last season but he'd prefer to use just one quarterback this season. "We've got to get that figured out," Beamer said. "All of us would like to get it down to one quarterback. We made it work last year, but it's still hard [to use two quarterbacks]." Beamer said he has not discussed the possibility of redshirting Taylor, a sophomore, and thought it was unlikely to happen if Glennon, a senior, beats Taylor out for the starting position. Despite losing seven starters on defense, its leading rusher and top four receivers, Virginia Tech was the overwhelming pick to win the Coastal Division. Quarterback was the position Beamer felt comfortable with, even with the looming decision. "It's a good problem to have," Beamer said. ...

The Brewers might be making a bit of history, and not just because they’re aiming for their first playoff appearance since 1982. Manager Ned Yost, never afraid to try new ideas, is seriously considering a Platoon — for his No. 5 starter. Yost knows the statistics, which say Dave Bush is dominant at home (4-2, 2.49 ERA) and terrible on the road (1-6, 6.95). Seth McClung’s splits are less drastic — 1-1, 3.28 on the road; 4-4, 4.95 at home — but the two match up in a way that has Yost leaning toward trying something nobody seems to remember happening in the long history of major-league baseball. “I think it makes sense,” Yost told reporters. “I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. All I’m trying to do is give us the best chance to win every day … I’m trying to do what’s smart.” On days Bush starts, McClung would be available for long relief, and vice versa. The Brewers are in this position because of a deep rotation with the acquisition of CC Sabathia and Jeff Suppan coming off the disabled list. ...

UPDATE, 8:50 Manager Joe Maddon said he plans to Platoon Eric Hinske (against righthanders) and Justin Ruggiano (against lefties) in leftfield to replace Carl Crawford, and do the same, when possible, with Gabe Gross (against righthanders) and Rocco Baldelli (vs. lefties) in rightfield. Willy Aybar will get most of the playing time at third base to replace Evan Longoria, at least initially. He also said SS Jason Bartlett's bruised right index finger continues to improve but still prevents him from throwing well enough to return to the field, and it likely would be Friday in Texas at the earliest.Executive VP Andrew Friedman said it "seems reasonable" to think Longoria would return to the lineup by Sept. 1 and while not discussing specifics of the fracture in Longoria's right wrist, said: "It's not bad. It could be a lot worse. There's no ligament involvement. It's at a place where it's very reasonable to expect it to heal pretty quickly.''The Rays will know more in two weeks when Longoria will be re-evaluated and x-rayed again. "I think it's very reasonable (for Sept. 1) as we're sitting here today but as everybody knows bones heal at different paces and it's too hard to say definitively at this point,'' Friedman said. ---Justin Ruggiano wasn't just called up, he's going right into the starting lineup, batting sixth and playing leftfield, and the Rays go forward without LF Carl Crawford or 3B Evan Longoria, who are both on the DL.T ...

I know this in not fully accurate but based on playing time this is how it would break down at our RF/DH Platoon. It is definately a upgrade over last year with Delmon Young.   gabe gross    12 hr 312 ab cliff floyd          16     297 jonny gomes  14   242 eric hinske     24  411 1262 abs projected are accurate and seem about right given a full season. 66  home runs combined 16.5 home runs each split by four.  If scored by position 33 home runs per position RF /DH Platoon 19 ab home run rate This is the best I could come up with with the season happening as it is. Last years home run leaders at position were Ken Griffey Jr with 30hr in RF and Jim Thome/David Ortiz at DH with 35. Almost league leading averages. Eric Hinske is tied for no. 7 overall in MLB for RF Cliff Floyd is no. 8 overall as a DH ...

Algebraic Methodology and Software Technology (2008), pp. 139-144. The so-called platooning problem consists in making autonomous vehicles move in a convoy. It crosses several domains: distributed systems, embedded systems, multi-agent systems and critical systems. We thus propose to use the combination named CSP||B of two well-known formal methods to assess and verify properties of this complex system. To that end we make use of previous theoretical results on CSP||B. We also illustrate how this methodology spans the multiple composition levels of the resulting model. ...

As he suggested he would prior to the all-star break, Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost told us a little while ago that he intends to use both McClung and Bush in the same spot in the rotation. McClung will pitch on the road, beginning Monday in St. Louis, and Bush at home, with his first assignment next Saturday against Houston. ...
