The 2008 Pitchfork Music Festival closed two Sundays ago with a set from Spoon. Bradford Cox of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound, indie rock's own Johnny-on-the-Spot (he'd jammed with King Khan to fill time at the Balance Stage while waiting for Cut Copy only moments earlier, and look for him here in an upcoming Special Presentation), joined them for their final song, "Mountain to Sound". Boris brought the smoke machine, the oversized gong, and their own brand of noise-rock fury to the stage on Sunday afternoon. This is what "Farewell" looked and sounded like. What a year Bon Iver have had. We've featured Justin Vernon's band plenty of times here on Forkcast and are happy to do so again. Here they are on "Flume". ...

De-hydrate: In keeping with the fest’s effort to be more responsive to the needs of the crowds, Pitchfork crews were out in force before the gates opened, siphoning standing water on the grounds into buckets and helping the now-hot sun do its work. Of course, fest organizers know that any work they do as custodians [...] ...

By Amrit Singh & Brandon Stosuy Aaaaand we're back. Quite a weekend in Chicago, and this is the post to put a Fork in our coverage of this year's party in Union Park. For day last, the threat of storms were nonexistent, but after that sun set, and the weekend drew to a close, it appeared that a delayed flight from Australia might be a bigger Festival-buster than the promised rain -- or, at least for fans of electro '80s-inspired heartthrobs Cut Copy . When we arrived at the B stage -- "B" stands for "best stage of the weekend," with its scruffier bands (No Age, HEALTH, High Places, Fuck Buttons, King Khan etc.) and ample shade trees -- we were told by a friend that the Aussie New Order-y quartet might not make it. The temporary replacement? Well, an ad hoc group pairing frontmen Bradford Cox and King Khan with the Ponys' Jered Gummere on drums and occasional spastic vocal intrusions by Jay Reatard . You probably saw the pics . An amusing way to stall, but the generic bluesy garage stuff really was just an amusing way to stall . As Cox put it, "We're stuck with you ... and you're stuck with us." Or so it seemed. After about 25 minutes, King Cox stopped, Bradford offered a few safety tips then announced that Cut Copy would be on in five minutes. This is when what remained of the audience lost their shit. By the time Cut Copy started playing, the crowd had swelled closer to it's original size ... and threw flowers at the stage, scre ...

By Amrit Singh & Brandon Stosuy After a night of "classic" recreations, it was nice to dive into the current state of the indie landscape. Yesterday's lineup was stacked, and we spent the day scissoring back and forth catching as much as possible, right through to Animal Collective's relatively ornate light show to close. (That's Panda Bear, trickled in green beams.) Here's how the day broke down, word-and-photo style: ...

Day one of the Pitchfork Music Festival went off with nary a hitch. Mission of Burma turned in an energetic and well received set, even thought the grounds were still slowly filling with attendees. Sebadoh 's revisiting of 1993 brought back lots of fond memories to this writer, while pumping up and amplifying their classic tunes to great effect. We did notice that the majority of the crowd seemed into it, even if the age bracket was one that was unsure exactly who Sebadoh was. Gimme classic indie rock? The highlight of the day was easily Public Enemy , who when held to the template of their classic It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back was simply electrifying. Chuck D and Flava Flav pummeled the crowd with their beats and their rhymes, and the masses returned the energy with a focused glee that was stunning. So far this year the organizers seem to have solved the sound issues that plagued them last year, and aside from the dinnertime rush, accessing the various concessions was never a problem. Now we're throwing on our ponchos, wrapping up our camera, and readying ourselves for day two! There is an image gallery to this entry which you can view at Chicagoist ...

The Pitchfork Music Festival kicks off its 2008 edition this weekend at Union Park, and we're going to highlight some of the "can't miss" acts of the weekend on Chicagoist over the next few days. Today we'll tackle eight can't-miss acts from the sold-out Saturday line-up. Jarvis Cocker 's set is easily one of the most anticipated acts of the entire Festival. The archly British ex-frontman of Pulp continues to pen lyricallly rich and glamorously elegant songs that continue to bolster Cocker's reputation as one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation. His output has always been infused with both dark humor and bleak characters creating songs that take one's breath away in equal parts shock and delight. (8 p.m. on the Connector Stage) The Hold Steady 's new LP, Stay Positive , has been making the rounds in the Chicagoist office and with good reason: it's another great collection of fist-pumping, sing-a-long anthems perfect for an outdoor Festival. We've never been disappointed by Craig and the band and we can't wait to work up a sweat to their set. (7 p.m. on the Aluminum Stage) While !!! 's last album left us a bit cold, the same can't be said for their live show. The band nearly stole last year's Lollapalooza as singer Nic Offer kept the security detail busy with his forays into the crowd and beyond the stage. Their dance-punk never fails to get the masses roiling and we're looking forward to seeing all those hipsters sha ...
