In Ear Park , the new album by Department of Eagles , comes out officially this week. It's pretty much the definition of a grower. The songs of Fred Nicolaus and Grizzly Bear 's Daniel Rossen are immediately arresting and pretty, but it takes a few listens for all of their subtly odd twists and turns to really take root. Here they are performing a couple of them in the first of a two-part "Don't Look Down". The album's lovely title track is below, and head on over to Pitchfork.tv for " Around the Bay ". Two more songs to round out this loose and entertaining Broken Social Scene set from Juan's Basement (we had Part 1 yesterday). The first number, below, is kinda historic, being an early jam on the fine "Churches Under the Stairs", which wound up on Brendan Canning's recent record . They're still feeling it out, but they have something. Finishing the set is " Death Metal ", whose title gives you some idea of where it's going. Pitchfork.tv page with embed code is here . ... I think the word you are looking for here is "bonanza." Dean Spunt of No Age has curated a DVD called Post-Present Medium: New Video Works (issued on his Post Present Medium label) that collects a boatload of interesting videos from all sorts of bands that have been bubbling up in the last couple of years. Some have been around a bit and some are new to this collection. A few highlights are below, but really, so many of these are worth a look. Pitchfork.tv has the whole set in high resolution, looking and sounding as good as can be. Head on over and check it out. People have compared Ontario's Constantines to Bruce Springsteen, and if that holds true, this video, directed by Kevin Drew and George Vale, is sorta like their version of " Spirit in the Night ". A boy with the world looking over his shoulder heads into the woods to party with some friends, meets a girl, and things start to happen. Are they hanging out by the shores of Greasy Lake? There's some panic, and then some fireworks; baby, don't know what they can do to you. Pitchfork.tv page with embed code is here . [from Kensington Heights ; out now on Arts & Crafts ] ... A fluffy, yellowish monster named Kapok comes upon a lone, hooded figure in the woods in this animated video for "Eltern", a track from the latest LP by Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann, aka Hauschka . The clip is the first in an Overture -directed series of three videos from the album, so no doubt we'll soon learn more about Kapok, and the mossy monster named Byrom, too. Here, Kapok has a warm, peaceful, near-mystical experience as he wonderingly admires the music's shivering strings, pointillistic prepared piano, and occasional hissy ambience. The forest setting befits the record's title, Ferndorf , which refers to a central German village surrounded by valleys and pines. [from Ferndorf ; out now on FatCat ] ... From the time we first heard about Cornelius in the 1990s, we've always known that this wildly creative dude had an interesting visual aesthetic. Now here's an extended argument. Sensurround is the visual component to his album Sensuous , and it finds him collaborating with directors and animators including Tsujikawa Koichiro, Japanese art/design collective Groovisions, and the incomparable Takagi Masakatsu. Watch it all week at Pitchfork.tv, and the DVD is available at the Everloving Store . Also, if you've never heard the Books' fine remix of "Fit Song", which is included on a bonus CD with the Sensurround DVD, well, you should. A stream appears below the image. ... Almost every day Pitchfork.tv is adding videos to our archives, clips new and old with audio and video quality like you've not seen elsewhere online. If you spend enough time watching videos at Pitchfork.tv, it can be hard to go back to the poorly compressed postage-stamp sized clips with the fidelity of a wire recorder that have become all too common. Hot Chip shouldn't sound like Sic Alps. So we'll take some space here in Forkcast at the end of the week to point out some newly added videos that are worth your time. Hey, speaking of Hot Chip and Sic Alps, we've just added clips from both. The entertaining video for the former's "Wrestlers" features James Murphy, and the latter is represented with "Bells (With Tremolo and Distortion)". Welcome once again to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to upcoming releases! This installment covers a wide swath of the crucial cuts you'll be jamming through the fall and on into the winter, from LPs and EPs to singles and music-related DVDs of note. Compiling such a list isn't easy in this day and age, with different release dates for digital and physical versions of albums, as well as different release dates for different countries. So we tried to stick with North American physical release dates as much as possible, with exceptions as noted. When an album's North American release date differs from its overseas one, we also made a note of that. Keep in mind that release dates are as shifty as the dude from Crazy Town, and any one of these is subject to change at any moment. read more ... Source: www.pitchforkmedia.com --- 4 days ago
"Pitchfork Live" brings you a set from Brooklyn's Vivian Girls , capturing a performance at Brooklyn's sorta-legit venue the Market Hotel . We get seven songs culled from their self-titled debut, including " Tell the World ", which video premiered on Pitchfork.tv. Combining punk energy, the looseness and spontaneity of the C86 scene, and bits of girl-group melody, Vivian Girls know how to bring it on stage. Yesterday, Owen Pallet's Final Fantasy project released Spectrum, 14th Century , the first of the two new EPs he's got coming this fall. The video for lead track "The Butcher", by director Jesi the Elder , is both playful and slightly unnerving, as the brightly-colored imagery-- a mix of hand-drawn animation and live action-- moves from the innocent and childlike to the grotesque and and back again, with a religious theme threading throughout. In the second installment of our Coney Island adventure with Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk and his pals, they marvel at the Snake Woman in a sideshow attraction, consider taking up permanent residence at Beer Island, hit the Astroland midway, and pause to consider the inexplicable (American) beauty of an empty trashbag tumbling down the beach (this came after Beer Island). Things I learned watching the video for "Street Trash", by Black Moth Super Rainbow 's Tobacco : If you obscure the faces of girls chewing bugglegum and videotape them as if they're in an American Apparel ad, it can look like they're doing something naughty. If you pirate the pirated footage of some weirdo in a Max Headroom mask taking over the airwaves of a Chicago PBS station in 1987 , it can look like Max Headroom's doing something naughty, too. And if you show a woman without her top on gyrating suggestively while sucking on her finger (pretty tame, but possibly NSFW), it can definitely look like she's doing something naughty. ...And if you show all that while repeating "la la la" over electro-psych grooves from your forthcoming solo album , then you, my fucked up friends, should be on television. There's always an element of nostalgia in the music Gregg Gillis makes as Girl Talk, as he re-configures hits from the past into something new. So where better to kick it on the new episode of "Daytripping" than the nostalgia-oozing amusements found at New York's one and only Coney Island. "Beg Waves", the overwhelmingly joyous opening track on Ponytail 's fine Ice Cream Spiritual , gets a kaleidoscopic video from directors Michael Guidetti and David Berezin. It sometimes looks as though they took as a starting point the cover photo for the Boredoms album Vision Creation Newsun , and you know, I've often wished that I lived inside that picture. Sunlight, shapes, crudely-rendered 3-D graphics of underground caves, colors blowing up like some Missile Command apocalypse-- I think Guidetti and Berezin understand the spirit behind Ice Cream Spiritual .
