Back to the Stage: "I hadn't done a play since I graduated college 10 years ago," Perabo , best known for performances in films like 2000's Coyote Ugly and 2006's The Prestige, says of her professional stage debut. "I had small parts in school plays," she recalls of her high school years, "but my best friend was the one who had all the leads." Perabo took time after college to train briefly at LaMama, studying with Ellen Stewart and various artists in residence. Now, a decade later, the articulate actress is delighted to be sharing the stage with Alison Pill, Pablo Schreiber and Thomas Sadoski. "I never choose film over theater," she insists. "I auditioned for plays before this one-I just didn't get cast!" It’s easy to envision the meeting where creators pitched the upcoming drama "Prince of the Motor City" to ABC: "OK, so it's like Hamlet, only set in the world of Detroit auto manufacturers, and we'll get the girl from ‘Coyote Ugly’ to play the love interest. Neil LaBute ’s new off-Broadway play Reasons to Be Pretty opened last night at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in the West Village to a rave review from Ben Brantley in the New York Times . He says of LaBute, whose other works include Fat Pig and The Shape of Things , “the authorial force that drives [the characters] is one I have never encountered in a work from this writer: Neil LaBute, the harsh and unforgiving chronicler of men’s darkest impulses, is making nice.” Last week right before critics weekend I met with actress Alison Pill , who plays the pivotal character in the four-person cast, which also includes Pablo Schreiber , Piper Perabo (of Coyote Ugly fame) and Thomas Sadoski . There's a moment in Show Boat where a woman sings that her true love, "just plain Bill," is "an ordinary man" who "isn't half as handsome as dozens of men" and is, on the whole, kinda stupid.� This is considered by many to be one of the most romantic love songs of the 20th Century.� In Neil LaBute's new reasons to be pretty the main character, reacting to his buddy's ravings about how hot another woman is, says that his girlfriend of four years may be "regular" looking, but he wouldn't trade her for a million bucks. This will not be considered one of the most romantic sentiments of the 21st Century. LaBute gives us no reason to believe that Greg (Thomas Sadoski), who works the night shift loading boxes in a warehouse and spends his 3am lunch breaks reading classic literature, is anything but a good guy who cares very much for Steph (Alison Pill) and would never do anything to intentionally hurt her.� But try telling that to his livid gf who is furious during the electrically charged scene that opens the play because Greg's co-worker Carly (Piper Perabo) has told her she overheard her bf saying she's ugly. There have been a number of information bits here and there coming from fans of Piper who have seen her performance in "reasons to be pretty". Nothing but positive reviews and even more from after the show. Apparently a number of lucky fans have had the good fortune to be outside the stage door when Ms. Perabo is coming out. It comes as no suprise to this editor that the words, sweet, kind, friendly, etc. are used in the descriptions of their encounters. She doesn't mind having photos taken with a fan or two and does not let them forget that she appreciates their support. She dedicated her performance this last Sunday, June 8, 2008, to her parents who were in the audience that day. Hope they had a nice visit. Stay a good girl Piper. ...
