The film division helped introduce American audiences to 'Pan's Labyrinth' and 'La Vie en Rose.' Goodbye, "Pan's Labyrinth"? That's the question hanging over Indiewood, as Warner Bros. contemplates the future of Picturehouse, the stalwart independent division of New Line that in its three years of existence helped introduce Americans to unique foreign flavors, winning three Oscars for Guillermo del Toro's fantastical dream of Franco's Spain in "Pan's" and another Oscar this year for Marion Cotillard's performance as Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose." ...

The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit and Gregg Goldstein have the scoop : After Warner Bros. absorbed New Line as an in-house production label, industryites wondered which Warners specialty unit would be kept, Warner Independent Pictures or Picturehouse . The answer came Thursday: Neither. In a move that sent ripples of shock around town, Warners said it is was shuttering both divisions, citing cost savings and an elimination of redundancies. Most of the units' 70 employees are expected to lose their jobs, including all 43 Picturehouse staffers. WIP president Polly Cohen said that some of her 27 staffers will remain on board to shepherd projects to the studio. The 11-year Warners vet's contract runs for about two more years, and she will stay within Warners for now, though she's unclear in what capacity. Some Picturehouse staffers also might remain. A little more than two months after Warner Bros. announced that it was absorbing mini-major New Line into a smaller unit of the studio, Warner Bros. president and COO Alan Horn released a statement today saying that Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures are ceasing operations. (Warner Bros. and ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY are both divisions of Time Warner.) "With New Line now a key part of Warner Bros., we’re able to handle films across the entire spectrum of genres and budgets without overlapping production, marketing and distribution infrastructures,” Horn said. “After much painstaking analysis, this was a difficult decision to make, but it reflects the reality of a changing marketplace and our need to prudently run our businesses with increased efficiencies." According to the statement, management from both studios will be meeting with Warner Bros. executives in coming weeks to determine the status of movies currently in development as well as distribution of already-dated films. Upcoming Picturehouse projects include Mongol (June 6), Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (in limited release June 20; wide release July 2), and The Women (Sept. 12).  Warner Independent’s upcoming releases include Towelhead (Aug. 8) and Slumdog Millionaire (limited release Nov. 7). ...

A few notes kicked under the door at Defamer HQ hint that the end may be near for Picturehouse, the Oscar-winning art house shingle plunged into limbo in February after its parent company New Line was absorbed by the Warner Bros. mothership . We have yet to hear where company president Bob Berney will wind up, though a popular rumor has him sharing power at Warners' other struggling boutique outpost, Warner Independent Pictures, with current WIP boss Polly Cohen. We posit at least one more underdog alternative as well — plus a prognosis for the remaining Picturehouse output — after the jump. Another whisper (and our own preference) has Berney starting fresh at a new company underwritten with hedge fund cash. The latter would suit him well with Cannes on the horizon and Warners' decreasing overall interest in the volatile indie marketplace; the studio would gladly get out anytime, but we hear they're willing to move ahead with Berney if he's interested. We doubt it, particularly as a co-president with Cohen; he's been calling his own shots forever ( quite well , we should add ) and would be too attractive a prospect to new money with fewer strings attached. And Berney could bring along the majority of his staff, who would likely take pink slips under the WIP scenario. In any case, the Picturehouse calendar doesn't bode well for any kind of longevity. Despite Marion Cotillard's Oscar win for La Vie en Rose , the bitter di ...

As first foreseen here last week, bad news rolled into Picturehouse HQ today in the form of a batch of pink slips . Warner Bros, is shuttering the art-house/indie/foreign distribution arm in the wake of its belt-tightening at Picturehouse's parent company New Line; we're a little more surprised, however, to read that Warners is also closing shop at Warner Independent Pictures. We knew Jeff Robinov and Alan Horn were unhappy with the boutique business, but Jesus. Picturehouse chief Bob Berney and WIP boss Polly Cohen, tagged for a possible (if implausible) power-sharing arrangement as recently as last week, are both being shown the door, as are both offices' staffs in New York and Los Angeles. We'll be following up later with word on that rumored independent venture of Berney's, but in the meantime, the full press release from Warner Bros. follows after the jump. Picturehouse AND WARNER INDEPENDENT PICTURES TO CEASE OPERATIONS (May 8, 2008 - Burbank, CA) Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures will cease operations, it was announced today by Alan Horn, President & COO, Warner Bros. "With New Line now a key part of Warner Bros., we're able to handle films across the entire spectrum of genres and budgets without overlapping production, marketing and distribution infrastructures," said Horn. Filed under: New Releases , Executive shifts , New Line , Warner Brothers , Warner Independent Pictures , RumorMonger , Distribution , Other Festivals Near the end of last week, Defamer spread the rumor that Picturehouse , once the indie arm of New Line Cinema and currently dangling from the edge of the hulking entity known as Warner Bros. , has its days numbered. Now that New Line is history and Warners, like many studios, has faced increasing cutbacks, it may give short shrift to the shingles responsible for handling artier fare. Along with Picturehouse, this also includes Warner Independent Pictures, whose recent release slate includes David Gordon Green's magnificent Snow Angels . Defamer suggested that Picturehouse president Bob Berney might wind up at WIP or head up a new, currently anonymous company. On Friday, Variety 's Anne Thompson put it in more coherent terms : It appears quite likely that WIP and Picturehouse will merge together as a single company, with current WIP president Polly Cohen working alongside Berney. Whatever happens, let's just hope that the final result still leaves room for the sharp selection of independent and foreign titles that Picturehouse has handled since its birth three years ago. Defamer points out that Marion Cotillard's unexpected Oscar win for La Vie en Rose matters less than the flop of Run, Fatboy, Run , while the John Simpson-directed horror film A ...

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy , Fandom , Distribution , Newsstand Man, this news truly bums me out. Variety reports that Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures are shutting down. It's not like this is shocking news; ever since New Line folded, it was all pretty much a given that both Picturehouse and Warner Independent would either close or merge in some way -- but it still stings for those who, like me, were big fans. In a statement, Warner Bros. president and COO Alan Horn claims this move won't stop the studio from taking more chances on young, indie voices. He says, "After much painstaking analysis, this was a difficult decision to make, but it reflects the reality of a changing marketplace and our need to prudently run our businesses with increased efficiencies. We're confident that the spirit of independent filmmaking and the opportunity to find and give a voice to new talent will continue to have a presence at Warner Bros." On a personal note, Cinematical has worked with folks from both Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures, and have always found them to be wonderful people who truly care about spreading these little indie films as far and wide as they can. Here's hoping that love, that heart and that passion will not disappear. We wish all those involved good luck in their future endeavors. Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

by Eric Kohn (May 8, 2008) The tragedy was in plain sight, but nobody thought it would hit this hard. As word spread today that Warner Bros . planned to close its specialty divisions Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures , shifting all projects currently in development to the larger studio and its recently absorbed subdivision New Line , a mournful tone took hold of the independent film industry. "It is a sad day when any film company, large or small, bites the dust," said President of THINKfilm Mark Urman . "One had heard and one had even considered that this was a possible scenario. It's still surprising when you see it in print." ...
