When it comes to career retrospectives, mere Best Of or Greatest Hits collections will suffice for some artists, but not for Philip Glass . Instead, the minimalist pioneer gets his very own Glass Box: A Nonesuch Retrospective , a 10-disc set showcasing material from his body of operas, symphonies, chamber compositions, film scores, collaborations, and other pieces.   Glass Box comes out via Nonesuch on September 23, but of course, it's no mere box set. In addition to the 10 CDs, there is a 191-page booklet with photos, texts, a composer's note, and liner notes from friends and admirers including David Byrne, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, director Errol Morris, artist Chuck Close, and Kronos Quartet founder David Harrington, among others. All of this comes packaged in a cube with each of five of its sides featuring an image of Glass by one of the following artists: Robert Mapplethorpe, Annie Leibovitz, Chuck Close, Robert Wilson, and Francesco Clemente. Glass also has a bevy of live appearances scheduled over the next several months, including discussions, a solo piano performance, shows with Patti Smith and his Philip Glass Ensemble, and performances of his Leonard Cohen collaboration, "Book of Longing" . read more ...

Chairlift | Photo by Ryan Muir via their MySpace page What they say about themselves: " Chairlift are a three-piece with dueling female and male vocals that formed with the intent of making music for haunted houses - instead they ended up with something more akin to the Top Gun soundtrack." Okay, let's check this out: 'Evident Utensil' - Chairlift &righticonhover=0x333232&text=0x333232&slider=0xF2F2F2&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0xFFFFFF&loader=0x838383&soundFile=http://www.kaninerecords.com/mp3s/evidentutensil.mp3"> They play tonight, opening up for Ariel Pink , at Echoplex at 8:30 p.m. (they switched to go on first) Also : There's a fundraiser tonight for the F Yeah Fest featuring Crystal Antlers, Brother Reade, Tweak Bird, Totally Michael & Slang Chickens. Why does a festival need a fundraiser? Sean Carlson explains in an e-mail that even though last was a huge hit, it was also a huge way for the producers to get into $15,000 of debt. What happened was their financial backer pulled out days before the announcement of the lineup last year. They had to choose between canceling five years of work or going on with the show and risking the debt. So tonight is there to help raise some money to keep the event alive. It's $6 to get in to the 9:00 p.m. event and is happening at the 6th St Warehouse (1269 E. 6th St. LA, CA) Tonight's Listings Matt Keating @ Cinema Bar Amy Kuney (CD release) @ Hotel Cafe Les Blanks, My Pet Saddle @ The Derby N ...

There are two kinds of people in this world: those that really like the hypnotic, repetitive, beautiful, eerie powerful music of Philip Glass, and those who, upon hearing it, make an unpleasant face, scratch their heads and say, “What the heck is that?” But Glass, who broke onto the New York arts scene in the 1960s, and is, these days, recognized by many as a brilliant composer, couldn’t care less about the negative comments that have been thrown his way over the years. He says just that in this entertaining, career-spanning documentary by Australian filmmaker Scott Hicks (“Shine,” “Snow Falling on Cedars”). But Glass is not at all cavalier about it; he accepts it all. He writes music for himself and he writes music for those who commission him — mostly for film soundtrack work. This is one of the more candid films you’ll see on an important artist. We’re introduced to Glass’ incredibly messy studio by his much younger wife, Holly, who is bright and funny and makes the film light up whenever she’s on camera. Soon after, Glass addresses his creative process, admitting that he has no idea where things will go as he’s working on them. Although his music is played almost constantly in the background, the film is more about Glass, the man, and the people in his life. He visits his artist pal Chuck Close, and the two of them chat about the good old days, when both were happy and broke, but knew they were on a great artistic adventure. ...
